The term “LifeScore” refers to a trademarked tool from Michael Hyatt — but it is so well named that its meaning is immediately clear. The name itself asks a simple question: Are you winning at the game of life? And if you are (or maybe you aren't) — how would you know?
I think it's pretty common for people to get so focused on one aspect of their life (like their business) that they mess up other important parts (like their marriage or their health). The thing is, if you never take the time to assess where you are, you don't know how to get to where you want to be.
The purpose of this episode is to encourage you to assess the balance in your life before you start setting goals. We'll talk about that in episode 153 next week.

I’m Mark Mason and I’m coming to you from the little studio in Dallas, Texas. I hope you having an absolutely fantastic week. I want to pose a question for you this week.
Why are sports so successful in the world, particularly in the United States? At least from my perspective, particularly in the United States we are sports crazed. Certainly in the rest of the world there is soccer mania, football mania if you will. Baseball is incredibly popular in certain parts of Asia. Cricket is incredibly popular in India.
All of these sports, why are they so popular? Is it because we enjoy seeing man’s triumph over adversity? Is there some deep philosophical meaning? Is it because of some genetics where we feel like we have to be in conflict all the time? Is it because we like to sit around and drink beer and watch other people work hard? In my case,]]>

Affiliate Marketing Success Story Show Notes

Brady started listening to LNIM to get some ideas about affiliate marketing for the website that he wanted to start and we began the process by sitting down to test the commercial viability of his idea. We convinced each other to pick a different niche after weighing in the details. As he was writing posts in Facebook about pharmacy tips to help friends out at that time, we saw that this has a potential to be a good blog. Brady has an unfair advantage because he is a pharmacist who really went to school and such so he has special knowledge that others do not have, thereby, if he turns this into a blog, he would have a wider reach and can help a lot more people. With this, he settled into this niche and arrived with his blog, the Helpful Pharmacist.
The next things we delved into are the challenges:

* Monetization – There was potential to his blog but products which pharmacists recommend mostly do not require a website for you to purchase them and they are usually inexpensive so he saw some limitations there. Putting up ads won’t have a lot of dollar potential either. But he knows that this blog will be something that he will be proud of and the knowledge that he is sharing things which a lot of people can benefit from was enough to get him going even without the money. After some time though, he started reaching out to people and he learned that they do not just contain themselves in their blogs, they post in other publications and share their stuff all over the place. When an opportunity presented itself where he got invited to write in a magazine, Pharmacy Times, he grabbed it and it became a way to distribute content while making more money. The blog has opened up doors for him further as he was able to get backlinks to his site and build more authority to his site.

* Time Constraint – Then there’s the challenge in terms of putting out content frequently since Brady has a job, a family and other commitments to allocate his time to. Every time he puts out an article, he receives great feedback and people are sharing his articles so this makes him want to do more.

* Conflict of Interest – As Brady works for a company selling pharmaceuticals, the possible reaction of his employers also got him worried as they might view this as conflict of interest. He met this head on by sending a letter to his direct supervisor and their director making them aware of his activities before publishing his very first article. He received no responses but because he was transparent, he felt confident in moving forward.

Brady has been doing this for about a year and a half now and he would want to continue putting articles out to help more people, find a way to make more money from the website, and even venture into possible speaking gigs. He is working on consistency in writing more articles and would want to urge everyone who is looking at doing the same to take action. He had close to zero experience in terms of technical abilities going into this and a lot of things he learned were gained from simply listening to the show so he shares that it is not as hard as it sounds. Creating a website and managing it can be done by anybody. So if you have a good idea, run it by other people who will tell you the truth and once you have validated it, go for it!
Don’t let ambivalence delay you or it may delay you forever.]]>

In episode 148, I discussed some key fundamentals. In episode 149, I talked about strategy. In this episode, we discuss real tips that you can implement on a daily basis starting right now.

Autoresponder Tips Show Notes

Today, we will get to where the rubber meets the road and talk a bit more about the practical side of email marketing. I have broken these types into 3 major sections: 6 big ideas which you can implement directly today, 7 execution tips where we talk about actually doing the tips we have discussed, and 5 details which I want you to pay attention to.

The Big Ideas

* It’s not a list, silly, it is a person on the other end of the email. If this is your approach, then you got it wrong. One person is reading that email and you are writing to that person. Write with a mindset that you are targeting one individual rather than a massive group that you can your email list. This perspective will also get you over the fear of addressing a big group. Writing to 500 people can feel scary so just think as if you are opening up Gmail and writing an email to a friend.

* Make it personal. Bring in your own uniqueness to your brand because you are you. You will reach people in ways that no one else can when you interject your personality.

* Help people by delivering massive value. Your email should not revolve merely around offer after offer. It should aim to engage readers as you help one reader at a time. Don’t email them if you do not have something to say or just because.

* Have an objective for your readers. Where are you trying to get them to? What is the journey that you have in mind when you plan your email sequence?

* Change the emails that you send based on what your reader is doing. Start developing the sophistication to change the emails that you send based on what they are interested in.

* Do the work that it takes to test and track. Install the Google Analytics that you need so you can look at your metrics such as open and conversion rates to understand how you are doing and what you can do to make things better.

Execution Tips

* Worry about deliverability. Pay attention to stop words that automatically trigger marketing filters, spam filters, etc. as you need to understand the spam score of your emails. Understand as well whether your email is going to land in Gmail’s marketing promotion tab or in someone’s inbox so you can take steps on how to combat this.

* Pay attention to subject lines. This may be the most important thing in your email as this will determine whether or not someone will read your email. There are lots of resources online on how to pick the ones which convert best.

* Keep your emails short and to the point. Respect people’s time and be cognizant that we are all busy.

* Ask questions and invite a reply. To keep trying to make these emails personal, engage your audience. Use this as a way to get to know your people on your list and get into conversations to tell you about what help they need, topics they want to see, products they like.

In episode 148, I discussed some key fundamentals. In this episode, we discuss my strategy for implementing lead magnets and the corresponding content..

Autoresponder Strategy Show Notes

A quick recap from our last episode — we have talked about these four items:

* Fundamentals Matter – Do email marketing right.
* Know Your Why – Know why you are doing what you are doing so you can match offers with buyers.
* What is your Offer – Find people who are in need and match them with something which will make their lives better.
* Enable Your Business Model – Your email marketing has to live at the intersection of Give Street and Take Street. This is what I call Lopsided Value.

Let’s pick it up from here –
Affiliate marketing works and the simpliest, most basic strategy is mentioning a product, sharing a link and then making commissions out of that via blog posts, podcasts or the like. But a better strategy is one which relies on email marketing. In this channel, you can capture your audiences’ email list and thereby would be able to repeat the cycle every time you deliver more valuable content where you can arrange a call to action afterwards. You can keep your audience engaged and will be able to maintain a relationship where an exchange happens: you deliver value over to them and they, in turn, can give back to you in the form of affiliate commissions.
An advance email marketing tactic that I want to introduce over to you involves having lead magnets with topics which are very, very specific. Once you get your generic funnel in place, you can start setting up branches or other entry points and you can implement this via Convert Kit as it supports the idea of tags. You can also create landing pages on particular topics then drive Facebook ads to this landing page, and give an email sequence specific to this before I transition you to the generic sequence. This is possible in Convert Kit as it treats people as subscribers and it understands information about the subscriber.
Please see the flowchart embedded in the slide presented below to get a clearer, visual version but the main idea is that if you have an email provider which supports something like tagging and sequences which are based on how a subscriber is tagged and identified, you can start segmenting your list and deliver specific content which is laser targeted at exactly what the person is interested in at the time when they visited your site. This is the fundamental idea that you need to implement in your business as the conversion rate for offering something which is directly relevant to a person is much higher than the conversion rate of generic lead magnets.
You need to remember though that this takes time so it is important to keep realistic goals in implementing high end email sequences. Setting unrealistic expectations will leave you distraught. Make out a blueprint and put this in paper and be persistent. The content itself not a business so have a strategy for matching offers with buyers and the best way to do this is email marketing done the right way with a tool like Convert Kit.

https://www.latenightim.com/autoresponder-strategy-email-marketing-1/feed/ 0 Autoresponder strategy can make or break your online business. Do you have a game plan for how to manage your email subscribers and the content that you will provide them over the coming months and years? How will you manage lead magnets? In the next three episodes, I explore why you should pay attention to your email marketing and how to think about your email funnels.

Autoresponder Strategy Show Notes

Fundamentals Matter – If you do email marketing right, it is still an incredibly powerful tool for internet marketing in general. This is still how people primarily communicate and getting to know the basics or the fundamentals is the absolute key in mastering the technique.
Know Your Why – Once you lock the fundamentals down, you need to know why you are doing what you are doing. What are you trying to accomplish, what value are you trying to provide, what is your business model? Whatever your answers are, the bottom line is that it needs to do the one thing that all businesses must do: match offers with buyers.
What is your Offer – Know what your business if offering. The best offers that I see are those which help people. The best businesses are all about lifting people up and delivering value. Find these people who are in need of something or who has a certain pain point and match those them together with something which will make their lives better.
Enable Your Business Model – Your internet business infrastructure – whether this is a podcast, a blog, email marketing, a YouTube channel – is a tool that you can use to match offers with buyers. You can’t just rain down mindless offers though; your email marketing has to live at the intersection of Give Street and Take Street. This is what I call Lopsided Value. We need to be able to give massive value which will overtake the ‘taking’ part. And even when you take, the value of the ‘take’ should overwhelm the price paid for it. Give, give, give more than you take.

https://www.latenightim.com/ahrefs-seo-keyword-tool-lnim147/feed/ 0 Wondering what SEO Keyword Tool to choose and use? In this episode, I break down my old-school recommendations from the past version my new, current recommendation, which is AHrefs. Wondering why the show is a couple of days late? AHrefs. Wondering why the show is a couple of days late? I was on vacation. Sorry for the delay.

SEO Keyword Tool Show Notes

The keyword tool that I have been using for a very long time was called Keyword Canine but has morphed into something new: Keyword Titan. This still works for those who were using Keyword Canine but if you don’t have access to Keyword Titan, you can check out Long-Tail Pro. This is a pretty decent tool which is worth what it costs so explains why I would recommend this if you need a traditional keyword tool.
What these keyword tools usually do is that they look at a keyword and show you the list of websites which are ranking for these key words. It will analyze these websites in terms of their on-page SEOs and off page optimization. The better ones have a keyword discovery mode telling you the related keywords that you might want to target in the content that you create. Keyword tools can also give you some sense of how hard it can be to rank for the key words you choose and what that ranking would be worth.
The willingness of Google to share information with these tools though has become more and more limited so the Google Adword Keyword tool has become more restrictive on the information it will give. Thereby, the value and importance of these keyword tools have changed. So what changed in the keyword market is that, these tools that analyze backlinks, like AHrefs, work backwards. They crawl up the internet and they count all the backlinks and assign authority scores to all of the pages that they index. The kind of data which AHrefs give is very impressive as they index millions of pages and they are starting to add their keyword tool to their backlink discovery tools. Some of the traditional keyword tools are going to rely on Google Adword Keyword tool for that so they will give you a lot of shorter list than what AHrefs can give you.

Entrepreneurial Depression Show Notes

The entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster ride. With all its extremes (very good sales day at one point and nada on the other) compounded by Facebook where everyone publishes their successes, plus the isolation that entrepreneurship can bring, it can drive you crazy to the brink and can result to something which will feel like depression. So what can you do about this?

* Avoid stinking thinking – Stuff your head with the good stuff. This forms a nice basis to whatever it is that you are going to use to fight and to stay positive in your business. This can mean avoiding negative people who are constantly bringing you down and turning to, maybe, a book or a podcast which uplifts you and makes you feel good about the direction that you are going to.

* Air it out – stating what you feel out loud can help you in three ways: it helps you get the negative things off of your chest, it makes you aware that you are not alone, and people can help you by giving you advice how to get over this emotion. Although you are a solo-preneur, you can get people to support you.

* Understand the root cause – uncover the source of the problem as sometimes, this is brought about by unrealistic goals that you set for yourself. Check your expectations if they really are reasonable but at the same time, celebrate small wins as well. Be fair to yourself.

* Stop soaking up information – know that comparing yourself to other people can be dangerous so cease comparing yourself to others by pausing from social media and other channels which may compel you to do so.

Note though that these feelings are normal and that you will get through this!

This week, I discuss whether or not you can run a drop shipping business from outside of the United States, how to handle returns, and how to select good suppliers.
I also discuss how “analysis paralysis” might be the thing that is keeping you from making progress in your business, and what to do about it.

Common Drop Shipping Questions Show Notes
What to learn all about how to drop ship with Shopify and AliExpress? Check out this amazing free webinar from our friends at Shopify.

Can I get my products somewhere other than AliExpress?
If you are not that comfortable in getting products from China and want to drop ship from other locations, this is absolutely possible. You can drop ship from anywhere and you can search Google for a long list of companies that you can use. There are lots of alternatives outside of AliExpress but I focus on this site as our example as it is super easy to get started using this site and AliExpress, Oberlo and Shopify work together very harmoniously. There are actually items which are shipped from the US inside AliExpress, you can use filter searches to find these.
Can I run this business from another country other than the US?
Yes, absolutely. People run drop shipping from all over the world and the only complexity is that, when you are dealing with AliExpress and getting money back and forth from Shopify and PayPal, there are charges associated with this. There are foreign exchange fees because your money is going in a big circle: your customer is giving you money through Shopify or PayPal (US-based companies), then you need to move this money to your local bank account, after which you will send it to AliExpress to buy the product and to pay Facebook using a credit (which may have fees if you do not have a US card). You can mend this by adjusting your prices to handle the fees, which is not a big deal, as we are just talking about a few percentages; look for credit cards which pay cash backs; or AliExpress Loyalty programs.
The best place to start marketing is the United States mainly because this is where the money is. There are a lot of affluent users in this country, a lot of the population use Facebook and a lot of online consumption happens here. It is recommended to start in the US and fan out from here but yes, you can also target other countries with higher standard of living and expendable income.
What do I do with returns and will there be a lot of customer service involved?
For providing customer service, the best thing to do is set up a support email for your store. Put up a contact form in your Shopify website so people can fill it out for any help needed and these would be forwarded to your store’s email.
When you get emails from customers who would like to return an item, maybe because the shipped product is broken or it didn’t work the way that they expected it to, empathize, apologize and get details of the concern and then send over a Return Merchandise Authorization number. Some people, when they learn you need more information, they would just forego the issue because they didn’t really pay that much.
As a rule, stay away from products which generate a lot of returns such as clothing and rings as often times, they won’t fit. When you are looking at products at AliExpress, pick those with lots of positive reviews and when choosing supp...]]>

I hope you are having an absolutely fantastic week. I had a super fantastic week. I was out late last night with my son and his baseball team, they’re about to start a baseball tournament and in order to kickoff the tournament they went to the local Major League Baseball AA farm team game together as a team. It was really awesome.
They’re 10-years-old, they love baseball, they love playing together, it’s a really cool team and we’re excited about the tournament that’s coming up this weekend. They started playing on Friday. They have pool play, which means they kind of randomly assign to each other and based on a couple of pool play games they’ll be assigned to a single elimination bracket. They will play through the weekend until only one team is left standing as the champion.
We’ll see how that goes. We’re very excited about that, as we always are whenever it’s time to play baseball. It’s a lot of fun. I was out late last night,]]>

Drop Shipping Basics Show Notes

If you were to open a drop shipping store today, what are the things that you should do? For today’s show, let will break this down and we will talk about how eCommerce works in general, how drop shipping works specifically and how you can start with a very low budget.
Free Drop Shipping Webinar
What to learn all about how to drop ship with Shopify and AliExpress? Check out this amazing free webinar from our friends at Shopify.

What is Drop Shipping, how does this work and why is it appealing?
The idea behind drop shipping is that you do marketing for a product that you do not yet physically possess and then actually sell it. It is about finding a whole seller who makes the product and sells it to you at a cheaper price and then actually ships it directly to your customer. This is appealing because whoever is doing the drop shipping ends up being responsible for production, warehouse, handling and fulfillment. To get the margins that you need, sometimes you will get the products from China and one of the challenges that you might run into would be product quality and shipping time.
A lot of people had benefitted from the ecommerce model where you buy things and store them in your bedroom but the challenge in this model is the fact that will have to worry about being stuck with a bulk of times. If you decide to go with drop shipping, you will not be stuck with a whole bedroom full of product – you just got to find a supplier and they will do the shipping and fulfillment for you. If in case the product you choose really took off, you can work out a deal with your supplier and with the track record that you have already established, you can opt to go back to the previous model for a better profit margin.

If you are to start a Drop Shipping Store, what would you do?
There are only a few steps and they are very low risk:
1. Pick a niche of products that you want to sell. If you already have an established website dealing with a certain niche, you can use that existing platform. If you do not, start imagining a niche where people are making impulse buys in a relatively frequent basis and you can observe this behavior in Facebook.
2. Look around the amazing products at AliExpress. This is the Amazon of China and it is not strictly a drop shipping shop. There are all kinds of stuff here in ridiculously low prices and the more novel an item is, the more successful you will be in selling it. The right price for something is what people will pay. Once you find your products, check out what shipping is available from China. There is this thing called ePacket which is this agreement between the Hong Kong and the US Post Offices where you can ship something out of China and get a valid US tracking number. With this, you can ship something out of China and get a USPS tracking number which you can give to your customer for them to track their shipment online. The shipping time is still slow but it is still better that the traditional shipping methods from China and it’s trackable. For impulse buys, in general, people tolerate the long wait as they do not really need them.
3. Strategize on how to sell your product. If you have an existing website, you can add Woo Commerce in your WordPress plug ins. It is a great, low cost solution to get ecommerce up and running in your website. Now, if you do not have a website, sign up for a free trial in Shopify.]]>

Conversion Tips and Tactics Show Notes

All conversions require optimization. A lot of times, conversion can be relatively inexpensive, high leverage, low hanging fruit to increase your revenue is to work on your conversion rate. Here are some tactics to master:
Creating a sense of urgency and scarcity – A timer or statements like ‘act now as supplies are limited’ are examples of this. This is a decision that you need to make as a marketer and sometimes it ends up to be an ethical decision as you may introduce false scarcity. In my opinion, if you are going to have a sale, you really got to change the price after then of the period you have mentioned or take the product off the market after its expiry. But whatever you do, I think it is good to add some scarcity into the mix.
Customer Testimonials – this is controversial in the e-commerce space but a lot of people are comfortable putting in fake customer testimonials. I will never do that but what I can do is to take testimonials from suppliers and place them in my websites as they are. Testimonials and reviews are more powerful if they come from real customers but if you document where your testimonials are coming from, those are fine. These are needed to improve conversion as people are now built to check them out before purchase.
Risk Reduction or Reversal – this is where you are giving your customer something to gain if they are not happy with the product. Examples can include money back guarantees, putting trust seals on your site and displaying them prominently, and 30-day risk-free returns. Do not fear to have your items returned as you need to give people this option. You will learn that there are lots of few returns than you can possibly imagine. Those returned won’t cost you that much and if there are a lot, then you have the opportunity to fix that.

https://www.latenightim.com/day-job-secrets-lnim141/feed/ 0 Day Job Secrets can be hard to keep. This week we take a look at some issues listener Phil has been facing at his day job. Phil's side gig is closely related to his day job and involves a troll. That makes the discussion pretty interesting. We also look at some unusual email marketing tips, and we discuss why you should “Bring Your Own Weather” with you everywhere you go.

Day Job Secrets Show Notes

So you have this side business that you are passionate about. How do you let your boss know about it? Or should you?

* When you are working on something for your side business that is related, in any way, to what you are doing in your day job, it is a smart move to talk to the people that you trust in your company. Let them know what you are doing and make sure that they are okay with it. Enlightened employers will even love this when they see the benefits to the company.
* Never, ever work on your side business while you are at your day job. Do not cross the beams. You do not want to give anybody the impression that you are using the company’s resources and time in order to advance the state of your business.

You will always encounter people – bloggers and the people who post comments, podcasters and their listeners — who will criticize and bring you down to their level. In my experience, these people have some fundamental issues going on where they may be jaded or have a scarcity mentality and they feel they have to come at you publicly and in the most inappropriate ways. So how do you deal with haters?

* Don’t feed the troll. The most you can ever do is to say, ‘Hey, thanks for your input. I’ll consider what you said.’ Treat the person with respect, whether he deserves it or not, then analyze if there is any truth to what he said so you can find value to it, if it is there. Remove the tone, the attitude and focus on the data. Take that tiny, little nugget of information, set the rest of it aside and forget about it.
* Consider checking with your boss to see if everything is fine and if there is a need for you to take action. Air it out and ensure you are still on the same page. Be prepared for the possible outcome though. If it’s leaning on the negative, at least you know about it upfront and you can agree on timelines.

Get Started Online Show Notes

You want to have an online business but how do you start?

* Educate yourself about the different kinds of online business that are out there. Understand these and pick the ones which resonate to you. There are pros and cons in all these business models and here are few:

* The blogging model where you write what you decide to cover and you work on monetizing your content.
* Virtualizing your services by bringing it online so you can have virtual customers all over the world.
* Affiliate marking where you create content specifically for the purpose of driving traffic to affiliate offers.
* Creating your own content by becoming an authority I your space through podcasts, blogs, YouTube channel and creating digital products for sale.
* Creating content and collecting ad revenue such as in the gaming industry.
* The eBay business models where you buy and resell things.
* The e-commerce models where you drop ship things.
* Sell things in Amazon.

* Research your choice and become familiar with the thought leaders around that business model. Further narrow down what it is that you want to do and find a person/s who is currently successful at doing things in the niche you have chosen. Avoid the temptation of multiple gurus across multiple business models. Find someone you know you can trust and focus on following the person on your way to success.

* Invest. Spend the resources that you have wisely to get to the place where you want to get to and spend it in a way which maximizes return on investment. You can find free content and spend time and effort consuming them but you can also trade time for money by buying courses.

* Focus through to success. Once you decide what you will be working on and who to follow, do your best to drive this thing into completion. Drive this from start to profit. Do not get distracted by something new and end by stuck in the messy middle.

Here's my little butterfly that I mentioned at the end of the episode.

Create a content editorial calendar – you can use this to jot down exactly what you can talk about for the rest of the year.
Use a Headline Generator – if you need an idea for the specific title you want to put in, you can also use a headline generator. It will inspire you to write helpful content using headlines that are really attention-grabbing that will help you with your social media exposure. The title is a tiny percentage of the battle but if you do not have an idea or a title, it’s a 100% of the battle – and that’s where you are.
The Anatomy of an Effective Blog Post – use this template which contains six components that your article should have:

* Compelling Title – lure your readers in with attention-grabbing, sassy headlines.
* Lead Paragraph – once you get those eyeballs to read your first paragraph, capture their attention, give them a reason to read the rest of the article and make their investment worth it.
* Relevant Image – use iStockPhoto and Depositphotos.
* Personal Experience – this is your unfair competitive advantage. There are things that are unique to you that you can use to help a specific set of people. Open up and share personal stories so you have the opportunity to find them.
* Main Body – this is where the meat is so you need to deliver. Don’t write a thesis or a giant wall of text. Small, bite-sized content is the most effective.
* Discussion Question – create a conversation. Be approachable, ask people what you think. And if they leave a comment, respond.

https://www.latenightim.com/how-to-finish-projects-lnim138/feed/ 0 In this episode we talk about how to finish projects, even if you are stuck. We often start projects with gusto, only to get lost in the messy middle and fizzle out. I offer there ways to deal with this situation in this episode.

How to Finish Projects Show Notes

In the projects that we are working on, there is a section that can be called ‘the messy middle’. You set these goals to whatever it is that you want to do and do it with so much passion and excitement when you imagine the outcome. On the onset, there is a flurry of activity and you make a lot of progress but after a while, that enthusiasm starts to wane, you encounter obstacles, things are harder and longer than you expected and all of a sudden, you find yourself in the messy middle. A lot us doesn’t make it and these become unfinished projects. So here are some tips for you to survive the messy middle:

* Once you have committed to a project, stay focused and say no to other opportunities. Drive your projects from start to profit. When you start, inspiration is great but after that, perspiration is the key. Stays focused and do the work.
* Recommit to the project. Go back and understand why you are doing what you are doing and re-decide that this is important. Try to find that original motivation that got you excited and recommit yourself. Emotionally reconnect to the project and that will drive you forward. When lose sight of our why, we lose our fuel so reaffirm your commitment to your project.
* Change the plan. You had a goal and a plan to execute but one of the reasons that you may be stuck is that unexpected things happened. As the quote goes, ‘No battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy.’ Your enemy might be life and all its surprises thereby your original plan may no longer be valid. But that is not a reason to fret – just go ahead and make a new plan. The objective is still the same but you may just need to revise some aspects in the project to get through the messy middle.

Do not give up on things that you really should be doing. But it’s okay to reassess and should you really ever need to quit, you must be sure that it is for the right reasons.

https://www.latenightim.com/online-business-accounting-tips-lnim137/feed/ 0 In this episode, I offer a few simple online business accounting tips that will help you decide how important it is to register your own corporation, open a business bank account and buy business accounting software like Quickbooks or Freshbooks. I also mention the fact that my buddy Cliff is about to start another Podcasting A to Z class.

Online Business Accounting Tips Show Notes

Should I form a corporation?
In terms of taxes, there is no big impact as most of us are part-time entrepreneurs and we are not making millions of dollars a year with our side businesses. Even if you form an LLC, what’s just going to happen typically is that you will file your normal tax forms, place a schedule that describes your business and pay something like your regular income taxes on a monthly basis. Once you are making more money though, consult a tax attorney to understand what’s best for you in your business.
If you are a new entrepreneur, you get tangled up with all these financial questions about whether or not you form a corporation and all that but what you really need to focus on is creating value. Printing business cards, working on graphics for your website footer, forming corporations are just going to distract you from the business of getting out there and creating value that people will pay you for. This can wait until you are making money.
Why is it important to keep finances completely and totally separate from your personal finances?
Go down to your bank and inform them that you will start a new business so you will need a separate checking account and saving accounts and only use these things in your business. This goes to say in your PayPal account and your credit cards. On a monthly basis, this also makes it easier for you to tally up all your expenses and income and understand whether or not you are making money in your business. If you have a business, treat it like a business wherein you have some kind of profit and loss analysis.
If the time comes that something bad will happen to your business and you are in a legal situation where someone is suing your for money, keeping your personal and business finances will help you in terms of liability protection.
What do I do about bookkeeping?
Get started with an excel spreadsheet. Some people do not even recognize the problem until it is tax time and they dig out all receipts so they can show expenses off of the income they have generated for the year. Start with excel or other online tools but if this is not something that you are comfortable doing, get a bookkeeper to periodically collect your information and do all the things necessary to keep your books current. There are virtual bookkeepers who you can tap.
If you are going to file an income tax as a business, you are going to file a schedule along with your income taxes and one important piece of this is a chart of accounts. If you are going to do your books yourself, pay an accountant additional money to help you set up a proper chart of accounts. In this way, when your business is small, you can use a properly constructed chart of accounts on your own and when it grows you can just hand it off to a trained accountant.

Procrastination Tips Show Notes

Call the Fear Out – this is the first key to overcoming a fear-based procrastination. Shine a light on the fear as the bad guys always operate in the dark. These fears that create procrastination only exist because you have not examined them for what they are worth. Take the time to identify what your fear is and illuminate it to own it and recognize that it is not a big of a deal.
Have the Right Information – do a little more research for you to be successful in what you are focusing on but not too aggressively as this can turn into another form of procrastination.
Bite Off Small Chunks – eat the elephant one bite at a time. Operating in small chunks can be a way to push forward from what’s holding you back through the fears that you have which cause procrastination.
Support and Accountability – having people who you can talk to, to encourage you and to hold you accountable for making progress can be a big and important thing. People who had experienced your fears can help you work through this and that can be a very good advantage.

Shopify SEO Tips Show Notes
Four solid tips which can help you get more traffic to your Shopify store for free:

* Make sure that you have a strong listing – people would just usually copy the few pieces of information that are available to them from the drop shipper. This would just include the size and the weight but void of real descriptions which will help people understand the product and would give Google something to chew on. Have at least a thousand words for your product listing. Start with the product that you are most interested in seeing on the top searches and write copies for those using the PASTOR method: call out the problem that the prospect has; amplify the pain that the prospect is feeling making sure you know the consequences of this problem; offer a solution to the problem by telling a story about how your solution is effective; overload with testimonies about the transformation brought about by your solution; make honest, win-win offers; and ask the customer a response to the offer.

Don’t just put any thousand words and do not put the sales/buy button so far down the page that it will decrease your conversions. Test your copy as well.

* Take advantage of the blog feature in Shopify – some people do not realize that Shopify has this feature. Target words which have high commercial intent but do not directly relate to your product. Answer helpful content questions then at the end of the article, you can add in that you have that product available in your store. Provide an internal link to your sales page after that. As people link to your blog, it increases your authority; and it also attracts visitors from Google to your page and drives traffic to your Spotify page. This can be easily outsourced to Upwork for a reasonable price.

* Optimize your Shopify title tag, SEO description and URL – optimize the page slug for your product, the title for your product page and your product description for searches. Make sure the keywords are those that you want to be ranked for and for the description, write them as compelling as you can to entice people to click even if you are not in the very top listing of the page.

* Build back links to your site – A few quality links back to your page will go a long way. Typically, you can get these through two ways: links that you leave around the internet in response to your product area (blog posts, forums, reddit) and blog posts which reference to your product inside the post. The latter can be easily bought from refutable sources. These can make a huge difference in your ranking results.

When you get into the Facebook Ad Manager, you may not be aware of this but you can choose whether you use the ad manager that’s attached to your personal Facebook account or you upgrade to the business ad manager, which is a more heavy-weight version, for free. The business ad manager allows you to manage multiple properties or pixels. To be organized, you need to understand there items: campaigns, ad sets and ads.
Campaign – this contains or is made up of one or more ad sets. It is important to know that each campaign has an advertising objective. This is the beginning in structuring your advertising activity on Facebook. You will use the Ads Create Tool to create the campaign by defining the objective on what you are trying to accomplish with your ads — do you want more page likes, clicks to your website, conversions, getting engagement or app installs, responses to your event, views to your video, etc. This is where you can easily turn your campaign on or off and where you can look at performance.
Ad Sets – this contain one or more ads or basically, a collection of ads. This is where you are going to make a decision on who your ads are targeting, what your budget is, the schedule for running your ads, bidding for the ads, where you are going to place them, etc. All of these happen in the ad set level. Two totally different audiences will need two different ad sets with different graphics, appeal and calls to action. They will work differently as well so your targeting for each ad set should be different. You can set daily and lifetime budgets for these ad campaigns at this level.
Ads – the creatives that you actually make, the ad that you actually run. You will have different ads for different target audiences thereby you can have different creative pieces which are effective in different ways. You can test these different creatives to understand which one works the best. By their automatically split testing inside the ads manager, Facebook will be able to figure out which one is the most effective, optimizing your campaign to the fullest for that certain demographic.

https://www.latenightim.com/facebook-pixel/feed/ 0 The other day, someone asked me to explain the Facebook pixel. Now I'm no Facebook advertising expert, but I'll never forget the first time I noticed that brands were “following me” from their websites back to Facebook. To be honest, It turns out that these brands were using a technology called an ad pixel and they were “retargeting me”. This is accomplished on Facebook with the now0famous Facebook pixel. In this episode, I spend some time explaining what the Facebook Pixel is and what you can do with it.
I also recap my experience at Social Media Marketing World and revisit the four goals I had for the conference. I accomplished all of my goals for the trip, and I tell you how and why they are important at the top of the episode.
Finally, I discuss the advertising promotion Amazon is running for April. If you are an Amazon affiliate, you won't want to miss that.

Show Notes
For our tech tip today, we will talk about what a Facebook Pixel is. Have you ever experienced going to a certain website and, upon going back to Facebook, you will see that same product pop up? It turns out that, if you are an advertiser in Facebook, you can get this little snippet of code called the Facebook Pixel and you can place that in your website so when people visit your site, they will be cookied with it. Conversion pixels have been used in marketing, particularly affiliate marketing and other advertising firms, well over a decade. The Facebook Pixel is a super smart pixel as there are lot of things that it can do for your website such as:

* Once someone visits your website, the Facebook pixel can keep track of actions done within your site. Knowing these things will allow you to understand all kinds of different information in marketing.
* When someone visits your site and then they went back to Facebook, you can target these people with Facebook ads because you know they have some sort of interest in your site.
* You can have Facebook take a look at the people who visited you recently and ask them to serve your ads to these same types of people – demographically, by age range, etc.
* Run dynamic product ads where you can change the ads you present based on the actual pages that they have visited on your website.
* You can understand cross-device conversion.

Bottom line is, you can optimize ads better in Facebook because it goes beyond advertising there. Even if they are gone, you can still track their behavior even when they are out of the platform and you can use this to analyze actions and increase the ROI for your ads. It enables you to do a lot more sophisticated things.
As promised in the episode, here is a screenshot of what Amazon native ads look like. The context of the ad changes based on your browsing habits on amazon (retargeting) apparently. Here, you can see that I have been looking at home automation, ring lights for my Facebook live stuff, and hourglass timers for productivity.

The picture below is the famous piano from the Top Gun bar where Meg Ryan played for Goose. The piano has been moved across the bar since the movie.

That's a pretty darn good question. Someone asked me recently why I choose to invest in conferences like Social Media Marketing World each year. After all, the actual cost of attending a conference is not small when you consider the airfare, hotel and conference registration.
But more than the actual cost is the opportunity cost. For me personally, spending days at a conference carries the cost of not doing other things. This week, I'll be falling behind on my podcast, taking time off my day job and missing my daughter's soccer game all so I can participate in Social Media Marketing World.
So why attend conferences?
As it happens, I have five very clear reasons for investing (that's how I see it) in conferences, and Social Media Marketing World is at the top of my “must attend” list.
Also in this episode, I discuss how DropBox saved me last week and offer a few tips on using DropBox. If you're not using DropBox, you might want to give it another look. Not only that, I take a look at this quote commonly attributed to John Wesley that he probably never said:
I set myself on fire and people come to watch me burn.

Show Notes

1. “Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” – This quote is attributed to John Wesley but often misquoted. There is also a significant amount of debate among legitimate historians if he really said it, but whatever the case is, I love this for marketing. Whoever said this quote, our enthusiasm should have this same level of intensity. When people sense this, they will be attracted to your brand, to your message and will help you rise above everyone else. Note though that passion is not enough, it should also be overlain with purpose. You may have passion but it may not be suitable for business so go for sustainable interest as there will be a lot more opportunity for you to be successful.
2. Dropbox is a cloud synching service where any file you put in Dropbox will appear in any other system that you installed Dropbox on. Here are tips of how you can get the most out of Dropbox:
• You can get a basic account with 2GB worth of space but you can refer Dropbox to your friends and every sign up will give you additional 500MB. A cool way to start!

• If you delete a file, Dropbox keeps it for 30 days. You can restore files and folders back if you realize you still need them.

• You can set Dropbox to automatically seek out and upload photos from your mobile. Awesome!

• Dropbox offers two-step verification so turn this on for extra security.

• Dropbox is the perfect solution for sharing monster files.

• You can turn on the Selective Synch feature so you can choose the directories or devices that you want to synch it with.

• A lot of cross platform applications that exist both on Android, Mac or PC shares settings with Dropbox.
3. Why am I going to Social Media Marketing World? It’s expensive so what’s the point? Here is a list of why I bother:
• It is an opportunity for me to reconnect with people that I have met over the last 10 years both online and in real life. This is something that I really enjoy so this is fulfilling for me. For my Mastermind group, this is the one time every week that we can all be physical together so I highly value this.

• It gives me an opportunity to meet new people and add them to my list of friends. Getting this opportunity and exposure to people I do not usually rub elbows with is very rewarding.

• There is an enormous amount of content in this conference. The number of ideas that I come out with is amazing.

• I am privileged that I can help and give answers. I have given a talk, hosted a panel and led sessions. This opens up opportunities and gave me the chance to say thanks.

Internet Marketing Fortune Cookie: “A crab wonton a day, keeps the doctor away” – The stuff that got you to wherever you are in your business may not get you to where you need to be so strategically and carefully, but enthusiastically, embrace change in your business because this will keep the ‘doctor’ away.
UTM Parameters:
A link is comprised of three parts: the HTTP/s, the website or the domain name, and the stuff after that which you would usually think as the post slug but it’s really the path to the file on the web server. But occasionally, you will see that the path that you are looking at is followed by a question mark and after this, a bunch of symbols, letters, numbers that may seem gibberish. In here, you will also see the three letters U, T and M. This section is called UTM Parameters and it stands for Urchin Tracking Module. These are tags that you can put in URLs to help you figure out where you traffic comes from. If you are running a Facebook ad, for example, you can add these tags to your URL so that you know later exactly where that traffic came from. It’s important for you to know which ads are sending traffic to your site to determine which ones to run and which ones to stop. What’s really cool about this is you can use the conversion goal inside of Google Analytics to nail down what source of traffic is really creating opt ins or sales for you on your website.
There are four that I use when I do UTMs:

* The Source Parameter – this is used to identify which sites sent traffic. It’s a required parameter and examples include Facebook, Twitter, Google or Bing.
* The UTM Medium – this refers to the type of link that was used and is usually described as the type of advertising medium that you are using to send the traffic. It can be from social, banner ads, cost-per-click ads, etc.
* The Campaign Parameter – you can set this to determine which campaign the traffic is coming from. Examples can be special content campaign or a seasonal campaign such as a Spring Sales or a Halloween Promotion.
* The Content Parameter – this can help you identify specifically which ad was clicked to bring the user to the site. This is often used for AB testing so it can refer to the logo, a text in the ad or which one worked in sending you the traffic.

Now that you can track things, you might be looking for additional information about optimizing your conversions. If so, take a moment to check out episode 126 on conversion optimization.
Here are some of the images that I mentioned in the episode. First of all, here is a picture of me with “Hispanic Elvis”. That's his description, not mine. This guy hangs out at the old market in San Antonio (on Market Street) in a restaurant called Mi Tierra. I've been eating there since I was a kid,]]>

Show Notes

Do I still recommend as a place to start if you are an affiliate marketer?
Yes, I absolutely do. It’s still a great way to start and to learn affiliate marketing. I would probably just recommend that you stay away from things that have incredibly low commissions – but we have always discussed that you should promote things that give you a decent commission. It means that some niches that you may have considered before may no longer be economically or commercially viable niche.

Why did Amazon do this and anger affiliates?
There are more than 3100 products affected in this tier and in my understanding, Amazon phone all those affected directly. The answer is always because this will make Amazon more money. Amazon is in the business of making money and not in the business of creating great affiliate programs. For televisions, for example, the competition is fierce and the margins are already super low and they cannot afford to lose more money. For those which they raised the commissions, they have the room to do so, so they are trying to compensate with that, or they are trying to drive behavior to sell as many high-margined products as much as possible.

If you are affected, what do you do?
Look and see if there are other affiliate programs that you can use in place of Amazon if you have been hit particularly hard to see if you can get back to your original commission level. There are also other places like Commission Junction where you might share a sale. You might find a retailer there who happens to sell TVs, for example, who are offering higher commissions than 2%.

Lesson: Change is always constant in this business. Use Pretty Link because if something happens to your affiliate relationship with some supplier, then you can change suppliers without having to edit 40k pages in your website. It makes it easy to maintain your website.

In the episode, I mention the new Associates commission structure. You can find this information on the Amazon site here, but I have reproduced the relevant graphic below. As you can see, by Amazon standards, furniture and home goods pay pretty well at 10%.

https://www.latenightim.com/best-copywriting-formula-pastor-lnim129/feed/ 0 When things are hard, it’s natural to look for a formula. When it comes to copywriting, the best copywriting formula is Ray Edward’s PASTOR Method. This is the formula that Ray Teaches in his famous Copywriting Academy course, Copywriting Academy course, and is an excellent framework for writing great copy.
In this episode, I teach you the six elements of the PASTOR method and discuss how to implement them in your copy. I also discuss the importance of storytelling in your copy, and discuss my plans to check out the 100K Factory program.

Show Notes
Storytelling is one of the most powerful techniques to convince people. This is not a new thing in marketing. It has been used in the most amazingly effective ways for longer than you can possibly imagine. Everyone can tell stories and two good tips are: tell stories from your own personal experience; that story to whatever it is that you want to talk about; and lastly, practice! The more storytelling that you do, the better you’ll get at it.
Here is the best formula for any kinds of persuasive communication that I have seen. It is called the PASTOR Method and was developed by Ray Edward. It talks about the six different components on how to make a completely constructed and effective copy.

* Problem – this is a reminder to make sure that you are calling out the problem that the prospect has. Be specific and articulate because this allows you to identify with the prospect on an emotional level. It will make them feel that you really understand what they are going through.

* Amplify – amplify the pain that the prospect is feeling making sure you know the consequences of this problem. Make sure that you are all in the same page about why this is a big issue.

* Solution – Offer a solution to the problem. This is a great place to tell your story about how this solution is effective. Give examples.

* Transformation – overload with testimonies about the transformation brought about by your solution. Let them see the people who are just like them.

* Offer – make the offer. Make only those which are win-win for you and for your prospect. Don’t just give the features, highlight the benefits. Make honest offers — don’t oversell, resist the temptation to make claims that aren’t true.

* Response – ask the customer a response to the offer. If you do not ask for the sale, you will not make any. Assume that the customer is going to buy and just give them the instructions on how to.

As it turns out, copywriting is one of the very few things in life that you can use to improve almost anything that you are doing. In this episode I select 11 essential copywriting tips from a sea of teachings on how to write copy based on their ability to help you immediately. I hope you enjoy the episode.

Show Notes
11 Simple Tips that you can internalize and do to make your copy better today:

* Craft a killer headline – more people are going to read your headline more than anything else in your copy. This is the very first thing that they are going to read and which will consciously, or subconsciously, determine whether or not they will read the rest of your content. A good tip is to copy any fantastic headline you see and jam it away in Evernote. Scan this file when you are ready to write yours and use it for inspiration. You can also test it by asking yourself: “If you are to read your very own headline, would it make you want to see what else is in the article?” and “If you are to put only your headline and your phone number in a classified ad, will people call you?”

* Tell stories – Develop the skill of telling stories as it is not only engaging but it is also entertaining so having a story will draw your reader in and help get them through the copy.

* Inject your personality into your copy – tell your story with color which comes from and if form by your life. People identify with that and it makes your copy seem real and trustworthy. So let your personality come through.

* Appeal to people’s emotion – whatever emotion that people are feeling related to what you are selling, make sure you tap into that and connect to it. Amplify that.

* Make your copy look good visually – does not need to be fancy but make sure it works well to other people’s eyes. It should be constructed in a way that it pulls people in.

* Speak your customer’s language – use the language that’s appropriate to your audience. Use words that people in that field use when they are talking not just to persuade them but also to build authority. Spend time to understanding your product by interviews, surveys, etc.

* Focus on the benefit – you need to identify the difference between the features and benefits because it’s the benefits that sell.

* Ensure your copy has intrinsic value – when you are writing, make sure that your customers feel like they are getting something. Deliver value as it makes the copy more engaging and it makes the prospects like you more.

* Ask questions and get them in a mode to say yes – this is a sort of copywriting psychology where you ask a series of questions to get you to say yes over and over again, and by getting your audience to say yes to several things in a row, this will get them into a ‘yes momentum’ to get them to say yes when it’s time to make the purchase.

* Include a strong call to action – you can’t leave it to their imagination on what they are supposed to do next. You want them to push the button right now so they can start understanding the benefits of what it is that you have to offer immediately.

* Organize your writing with a formula – follow a well-thought of formula when you are writing. Whatever method you choose, you got to have one.

This week we welcome Terry Dean to the podcast. Terry has been making a living online for over two decades (wow), and is an email marketing expert.
Show Notes
Terry Dean is a legend. He has been doing the internet business thing full-time since 1996. Better still, Terry has helped thousands of entrepreneurs just like you get started building their online business. A resident of Dunnellon, Florida, Terry is married and has 2 dogs.
One of the things that I love about this interview with Terry is how he authentically shares his own origin story about delivering pizza for Little Caesar’s (Pizza! Pizza). My reaction is that if a pizza delivery guy like Terry can make online business work, then so can you.
In the episode, you’ll find out the three critical elements that should be in every email that you send, and why just delivering massive value is not enough.
The money, truly, is in the list — its true two decades ago and is true today. With 21 years of experience in his arsenal, Terry has tips for us to boost our profits using our email lists. Here are the fundamental things in line with email philosophy:

* To build a list, focus on the audience first. Everything you do, think about your audience. The first thing that you need to have is a lead magnet and this equates to a freebie that you give away to get people to subscribe to your list. Lately, Terry calls this a ‘Free Preview’ as he views that gift that he gives as a bridge to whatever I am offering next. If it is a tennis client, for example, you can give him a free video on how to improve his serve once he opts in, and then give him a link to the first product for sale. Since it’s about the serve, we will give him a product or an item related to that. You offer him the next step after, that’s why Terry calls it the Free Preview. With this simple system, their clients would usually bump their sales up to 30% – 50% within 24 hours. There is no need to warm the prospect up, you ride the momentum.

* Split test. People don’t test nearly as often as they talk about it. Terry would test different affiliate pages to see which ones would sell best. You can have switch three different offers and see which ones resonates best to the kind of traffic in that landing page. When you are starting out, don’t worry about the colors of your buttons or things like that instead, test big things such as main headlines, offers, or prices.

* Once you gain a subscriber in your email list, start sending out emails using auto-responders or broadcast messages. For beginning, Terry suggests auto-responders upfront to establish a relationship. The biggest mistakes that you can do is to send a whole bunch of promos, which can burn your list really fast, and the other one is sending content without promoting anything. The latter is hard to fix in the long run because it’s not going to build you a list that’s going to buy from you. What you want to do is to give value but it needs to be in contrarian in content especially in the beginning. In means that when everybody else is saying X, but I say the problem is Y instead. You will want your content to be contrarian and different with what others are saying and to start off, you can use the ‘rant style’ type of email. It gets your email noticed in the midst of the noisy marketplace.

* For affiliates, the best email that you can send to promote any affiliate program is a case study for their product. Buy their product, use their product, and tell people the results.

* Value is more than just content. It is direction and guidance from someone you ...]]>

https://www.latenightim.com/call-to-action-tips-lnim126/feed/ 0 Call To Action Tips are at the top of the agenda this week. Last week I spent time talking about Cliff Ravenscraft’s thoughts on Call to Action fatigue. He responds to my commentary in this episode. After hearing what Cliff has to say, After hearing what Cliff has to say, I flip the script and offer six critical calls to action tips that will help you create better call to action and increase conversions.
I also describe the marketing lessons that you can learn from my experience with the Apple AirPods. I just got mine this week.

Show Notes
Some calls to action are important but we have to be careful how much we are asking our audience to do. Also, if we have so much promotion in our content that it starts influencing what we are talking about, it will start to junk our show up.
I believe that most of the content you create, if not all, should be created with a purpose. Whatever it is that you want to talk about, the call to action there is to create better content. If you are not delivering content that urges people to do something, then you are not delivering it right. Sometimes, the action that you are pushing will result to the exchange of money between you, your audience and a third party. When your call to action involves money, the issue will always come back to money. Is the value that you are delivering justifying it? Are you doing it for the right reason? These calls to action can be done the right way. Here are some tips in doing great calls to action:

* Are your calls to action being made with integrity? – Are you making this call to action because you really believe that the value you deliver is really worth the price?
* Does your call to action have a clearly stated value proposition? – What’s in it for your audience? Focus on the benefit and outcome that you would want them to receive.
* Go big or go home – make a big deal out of your call to action. A good call to action should be prominently, clearly and enthusiastically stated. It will help you with your conversion, amplify your integrity and emphasize the benefits that they will get.
* Deliver what you promise – over deliver or at least make sure your product matches what you committed.
* Test your call to action – Use tools to split test things such as colors, graphics and headlines. Little things can affect conversion rates.
* Take advantage of FOMO – if appropriate, your calls to action will be more effective if you create a sense of urgency or scarcity.

Here’s a silly selfie of me sporting my new Apple AirPods. In the episode I talk about the product marketing lesson that we can all learn from this amazing Apple product.

Given that, understanding how to optimize content to take advantage of the increased use of voice in s... I also talk about the impact of Call To Action Fatigue, a topic recently raised by my friend Cliff on the Cliff Ravenscraft Show.

Show Notes

* Call to Action Fatigue – I was listening to the Cliff Ravenscraft show and he raises several issues about Call to Action Fatigue. Call to Action fatigue is basically when you are stressed out and tired with always promoting something. Everybody seems to be promoting everything all the time and our content channels are now polluted with all these Calls to Action. Cliff’s point is view is simply; if the content that you are posting is merely for promotion to be able to land a direct sale or commission off from something else, this is a huge business mistake.

* Google Voice Search Optimization – Google has been emphasizing mobile but the other thing that they have been doing to prepare to transition to Google Voice Search Optimization is adding featured snippets on top of search results. If you enter a question to Google that has an answer, you will get back featured results which are in a Q&A or How To format. From an SEO standpoint, this is absolutely something that you want to do. The best tip to do this is to construct your content in a way that allows you to rank and get into these featured snippets. The easiest thing to do that is to ensure that your content has a section of frequently-asked questions with direct, concise answers to those questions which will drive Google to feature that page. It will also help have an image nearby. The questions that you should have answers for should include the who, the what, the when, the where and the why.

In the show, before I start the discussion about google voice search optimization, I mentioned Escape Expert in Plano, Texas where I had my escape room experience. Here is the photo that I was talking about.

We also take a moment to celebrate six months of consistent podcasting. I break it down and try to answer the question “what's different”? After all, I've been trying to get this right since 2009.
Best of all, there is an internet marketing fortune cookie about oversleeping that we need to crack open.

Show Notes

* Listener Feedback: Gil’s site changed from http to https without him doing anything.

* What could have triggered this? – His website host probably enabled https across their whole platform.
* How did people find the https pages? – Gil was not linking to the https sites and all the backlinks to those sites are all http. Google prefers https so strongly that when they are crawling sites, they test if both versions of the webpages are available and if they are, they are preferring the https version of the page.
* How do you fix this? – What does ‘fixed’ mean? If I were Gil, I would go ahead and understand why https is working and then just make sure that everything is working correctly. After that, do the work to let Google know that https is the preferred version of the website.

* Internet Marketing Fortune Cookie: “Tomorrow will be a productive day, don’t oversleep.” What does this mean?

* Carry around your own weather – It may be the worst day of the month but tomorrow is going to be another day. The sun is going up tomorrow so decide that it is going to be a productive day and make it happen! If you say you can or you say you can’t – you’re right. Just decide what will happen and you already have a leg up on what’s going to happen.
* Don’t oversleep – don’t toss away your opportunity. Be ready to seize those opportunities every day. Every little bit that you can do counts as it adds up over time.

3. I stumbled into a great article that I think is spot on. The article is entitled SEO priorities for the New Year by David Freeman and he breaks this down into two things: Quick Wins and Large Projects. Here are some highlights:

* Log into Google Search Console and read what’s there – there are all kinds of things there that will tell you how Google views your site. Find out what you can fix and make them love you more.
* Content Gap Analysis – there are amazing tools for this now to show you, from a search perspective, if you need to grow content. You can use this to create an editorial calendar for the entire year. What do you want to see in your website by the end of the year? What do you need to flush out? What is missing?
* Switch your site over to HTTPS.
* Enable exhilarated mobile pages.Make sure your site is mobile friendly.

https://www.latenightim.com/search-engine-results-page-optimization/feed/ 0 Search Engine Optimization is not just about rankings. Once you get rankings, you must optimize the conversion of those rankings to clicks (and ultimately, to reader action). We call this Search Engine Results Page Optimization. In this episode, We also talk about the impact of readability on search engine rankings and handle some listener feedback.

Show Notes

* Does readability impact rankings? – Yes it does because it is going to impact how people view your article. If you are not targeting the right level of readability to your audience, they are not going to ‘like’, share or link back to your content. Also, Google’s intention is to put the best content on top and part of having a great content is having content which are easily read by your content. Your content has to be delightful and being readable is part of it. It might not be included in the algorithms today but over time, readability and things which are influenced by readability, will become more and more important.

* The three components of a search engine results page listing and how to optimize each element to convert:

Whether or not someone clicks on your link, depends on whether or not your listing in the search engines has been optimized to convert the click. The title, the description and the URL are three things that you have control of and are calls for action for the readers. You are trying to influence a searcher to prefer your page rather than the other ones nearby.

* Title tag – you need to have key words for Google SEO purposes but for the searcher, they are paying attention to this to decide whether or not to click on your link. So do two things: craft the title so that’s its interesting and encourages readers to click; and make sure it’s no longer than the number of pixels that Google is allowing you to show.

* URL – you want the keyword for SEO but also so that readers can see that it’s clearly about what they want. You also want it not to look spammy. Make it look trustworthy and inviting to click on.

* Description – it does not have much of an SEO impact from an algorithm perspective but it has big impact whether or not people click on your page. It must look enticing.

Each December you get excited about the coming year and set some wonderful goals to be accompl... Then, somehow, the year comes and goes and you did not manage to accomplish all (or perhaps even any) of your goals. Ray Edwards was no stranger to this cycle. But in 2015 Ray employed Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever course techniques to achieve amazing things over the next two years.
In this episode, we sit down with Ray for an intimate look at exactly what he was able to accomplish, and how he did it. My hope is that you’ll be able to learn from Ray’s example and that the insights Ray provides will be instrumental in in your success in 2017.
What's amazing about this interview is how transparently Ray shares all of his past failings and shortcomings. It's great stuff, and I'll bet is sounds a lot like some of the things you have experienced in your life.

Show Notes
This was a great discussion with Ray — and surprisingly intimate. Ray reminds us that even really successful people have their demons, and have to work to overcome them. I feel privileged to have spent time with Ray discussing something so personal.
One of the things that I love about Ray is that he is “unashamedly Christian” but he does not judge those who don't share his beliefs. Ray hopes that you can take something away from his teachings no matter your value system,
The really key takeaway for me in this episode was the fact that you need to know WHY you are trying to accomplish whatever goal you set. He quotes Gail Hyatt, who said “People lose their way when they lose their Why”. As a direct result of that (and learnings from Michael Hyatt's Best Year Ever course), Ray was able to harness the power of why to great effect.
You won't believe the things Ray (who was already successful by any measure) was able to achieve using the strategies he describes in this episode.

It's true: @RayEdwards explains importance of @GailHyatt's words: People Lose Way When They Lose Their Why. https://t.co/7Qn0Yvky41 pic.twitter.com/wOSfZgfKwh
— Mark Mason (@LateNightIM) January 12, 2017

By many measures, Ray was already successful but the rest of the story was that he had health problems and he was deep in debt. He had areas wherein he was not employing the same discipline that he is applying in his career and there were facets behind the scenes that people could not see. He also made resolutions year after year for the last 10-15 years to relieve himself and his family distress but each year goes by and nothing happened. It began to feel like an integrity issue then got hit with a health diagnosis that he had a generative neurological disorder. And he hit rock bottom and made himself choose: either he could face the fact that we will die overweight and broke, or do something about all of these.
He embarked on a two-year journey where the results included losing 60 lbs. of fat; paying off all consumer debts except for the mortgage (which they have already cut in half); finishing about 70 books including the Bible (which he read, actually read, four times in one year); deepening his relationship with his wife; and being able to take a 30-day sabbatical. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that doctors said was only going to get worse but he begged to differ and actually got better! He gives glory to the Lord and hopes that it inspires others. But when you look back, we can only wonder,]]>

This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I talk all about my holiday excitement which involved 17 (count ‘em, 17) hacked WordPress websites. I also discuss the new “State of Blogging” report from ConvertKit.

When I found out that my site was hacked, I looked at the nature of that hack and found out that hackers had compromised the website and added a tremendous amount of content to the site. The CPU load on the server had gone through the roof because of the enormous amount of traffic as the site was being used a bots and other things. When I did an audit, I found that the tons of information added that I didn’t own drove the disk to be almost full – it was a totally mess. It was a total takeover of my 17 websites which were on this one server. Luckily, the server was hosted at Site Ground so I sent a ticket, pinpointed the time it was hacked, and asked them to roll the site back and restore a backup from the time when I believe it was hacked. This doesn’t work every time though as hackers sometimes now that that this is what you will do. They will exploit the site and will let that sit dormant for a long time so your backups are too old to be of much use. As for mine, Site Ground fixed it pretty quickly and I was back up running but with a website which had been restored to its previous state, which we know, can be hacked.
So how do you harden a website? Majority of the WordPress hacks either come from the hosting platform or from out-of-date plugins. Here’s what you can do today with practically no technical expertise:

* For recovery purposes, have good backups. There are plugins that you can use for backups but there is nothing which can beat a server backup from your server provider. Check in with your host to see if they provide backups and if you can afford that.

* Make sure WordPress is up-to-date. Get everything updated to run the very latest version as you need to make sure that your site is secure. This includes your themes and plugins so I would recommend turning automatic updates on.

* If you have bunch of stuff installed that you are not using – themes, plugins – delete these junk out of WordPress. Go into your plugin/theme manager and remove them as they can provide points of attack. If you do not need a plugin, do not use it. Use plugins only if you need them.

* Do not use ‘admin’ as username for the administrator of your blog. This gives hackers half of the puzzle. Harden your password – change this often, make it very hard to guess and consider using two-factor authentication.

* Use the best hosting service and sign up with a reputable one. Choose one which is designed for WordPress.

* Add your site to Google Search Console as they are watching your site thereby will notify you once your site is hacked.

* Add a security plugin. I use WordFence which has firewalls, looks for hacking and bots, pays attention if your plugins or themes are out of date and sends you notification emails if they are.

Here is the message that I received from Google….this will really make your stomach hurt. Especially when they start coming in for multiple sites one right after another – “WordPress Website Hacked”.

Here is that video about the candle that a promised at the very end of the recording.

I just found out – and was completely shocked about it – that affiliate links are illegal in MailChimp. MailChimp is an email service provider which is a disruptor, together with Infusionsoft and AWeber, in email marketing in the last 15 years. It turns out that MailChimp has this crazy clause in their terms of service that talks about affiliate links potentially causing your emails to stop. The clause is linked below but some portion of it states:
“Affiliate marketers are typically rewarded by a third party for recruiting customers. The reason we don’t permit this activity is that there’s no real obligation to care about subscriber satisfaction or to maintain a healthy e-commerce relationship with them. MailChimp isn’t meant for this type of marketing.”
They also noted that linking is fine but you need to ensure that the URLs that you link to are not blacklisted or else your campaigns may be stopped. If I were a blogger who is planning to monetize my blog knowing full well that I will be promoting people’s affiliate products of various types, and learning how flaky these spam lists are, I would stay very far away from MailChimp.
————————————
In the episode, I refer to MailChimp’s “term and conditions” and “terms of service” — but what I am reading from in the episode is a MailChimp knowledge base article about those terms (authored by MailChip and on their site).
Specifically interesting is this bit:
Affiliate marketers are typically rewarded by a third party for recruiting customers. The reason we don't permit this activity is that there's no real obligation to care about subscriber satisfaction or to maintain a healthy e-commerce relationship with them. MailChimp isn't meant for this type of marketing.
Their actual Terms of Use are here and basically state that they can close your account for any reason (presumably for the reasons stated in the knowledge base article above. This is not all that unusual. No one should have to do business with someone unless they want to (aside from reasons of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc).
The interesting things is that the MailChimp affiliate marketing position clearly indicates that they don’t want to do business with affiliate marketers (us).

How can you calculate an affiliate site earning potential? This is an important question when you are deciding to build your first site and can help you understand how much to invest. In this episode, I “riff” off of an article published by my buddy Andrew Hansen and give you a framework for evaluation of your sites.
Also, I talk about SEO trends for 2017 — particularly the ongoing importance of mobile. You need to have a responsive design and you should consider AMP. Don’t know what all that means? Don’t worry, I discuss it all in the episode.

Next week, I’ll bring you an update on the niche site.
Show Notes

* Predictions for 2017 are now emerging, some are goofy but some resonates. One article that I love talks about Google moving from desktop first index to a mobile first index. Two things that they might mean to you, the blogger: you need to have a truly responsive, outstanding website going and Google’s search engine request to have an accelerated mobile pages (AMP). This prediction seems spot on to me and that means mobile will be increasingly important in 2017 and whatever your plans are for creating affiliate websites or blogs, you better think mobile first.
* How do you predict how much money a particular website would make? I call this Affiliate Math. These are guidelines that you can use to build a spreadsheet to figure out how much money you should invest in your website:

* Let’s say that you have a page and its targeting some key word terms that are very closely related and top 3 of those have 10k searches in total. If you are able to get to the 3rd position in the search engine results (Rank 3), you can expect maybe 10% of the order of clicks. Then let’s say you make great articles because you apply the principles of copyrighting and everything that we have discussed in the past thereby people are engaged after they checked your website out and they click through your product, then you are looking at a click-through rate of maybe 30%. After this, look at earnings per click information to expect how much you will be getting for that page for that month. If you have multiple pages in your website which are of this quality, then you can start multiplying this using the same principles. here's an example calculation:

Out of 10,000 visitors, 1,000 visited your site (10% of clicks) because you are on Rank 3 in the Google search engine. Out of the 1,000 visitors in your site, 300 clicked through your product (30%). Your earnings-per-click is $.50 thereby you should be expecting $150 for this page. If you have 10 pages like this, multiply $150 by 10. You should be expecting $1,500 per month for this website.
Thanks to everyone asking about the course:

https://www.latenightim.com/easy-seo-strategy-keywords/feed/ 0 Easy SEO Tips and Strategies for getting organic keywords are sort of like “fast weight-loss” programs: they are everywhere, but most of them don’t work. This week is different. This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, In the news, we discuss the new features just introduced at ConvertKit. I’m really excited about new automation features that make ConvertKit even more awesome than it already is. Now, you can have messages in sequences that are conditional based on tags. Previously that was only available in broadcasts. Additionally, this idea of conditional publishing extends all the way down to the message level, where you can exclude blocks of text within a message based on tags. It’s so cool!

Show Notes
The tactics that I am going to discuss in our main segment is based on the fact that your position in the search engine rankings doesn’t matter unless you are on the first page. The vast majority of all the traffic that comes from Google comes from the first page because most searches don’t click past the first page.
One approach that you can take to instantly get more traffic to your website is go and identify all of the keywords on your website for which you are ranking one through ten, and of those, do whatever you need to do to move those pages up to the top because every notch up that you go can make a huge difference to the amount of traffic that you can get. How will you do this? Focus on the low hanging fruits.
First thing is figure out what is it about your content that’s not as good as your competitors’. There are lots of reasons why you would want to update your content, and with it, your publish date. Google likes fresh and long content so it’s going to help you. When you add more content, you will be adding key words that are related to your content and all of these will help you rank. Even if you do not see a change today, long-term, you will see results. In the long haul, you will move up from the bottom up due to improved content.
Another way to move up is to make sure that you are following the 14 critical SEO tips for bloggers in Episode 109 so go follow that checklist to help you remember what to do in each post that you are trying to optimize.
The other thing that you can do is to get backlinks to your content by contributing to other people’s blogs in the form of guest posts or leaving helpful and thorough comments in various places such as forums, and then linking back to your content.
Social signals are also of increasing importance so consider re-promoting pieces of content in social media. It has a potential of tickling whatever social signals are in Google and also has the possibly of being shared by others by linking to it.
If you do these, eventually, you will tackle the task for being on the top ranks.

https://www.latenightim.com/overcome-procrastination-lnim117/feed/ 0 Learning how to overcome procrastination is a critical skill for anyone who needs to get things done (and isn’t that essentially everyone?). This is especially true for online marketers because procrastination is one of the most debilitating conditions...
Because learning how to beat procrastination is so important, I’ve decided to dedicate and entire episode to it this week. Now most “procrastination tips” that you find on line talk about tactics for beating procrastination. That’s important, and I discuss 10 tips for beating procrastination in the episode.
But there’s more to the struggle than just tips and tricks. To truly win against procrastination, you need a process to identify, own, and get at the root cause of your procrastination. I discuss all of this in the episode.
Show Notes On Overcoming Procrastination

* Recognize Procrastination – Sometimes, your procrastination is so built in your subconscious that you don’t realize that you continue to put stuff of for good reasons and so much time goes by that you legitimately forget about it entirely. Understand when this is happening to you. Writing down things and keeping track of ideas of the things that you might want to or should do someday can help. Reviewing those lists can help you recognize procrastination.

* Understand why is it that you are procrastinating – it is usually that you don’t have a good reason to do it in the first place: you are not connected with your ‘why’, you are not sufficiently motivated to do it. So unpack the reason why it is in the list in first place and ask if it is really important. And if it’s not, then take it off the list or de-prioritize it so you are not procrastinating anymore. If it is important, understand why it’s important so you will have the fuel and intrinsic push that you need to get something done.

* Go ahead and forgive yourself – All of us are guilty of procrastinating at one point or another and now, you are working to get yourself better. Once you’ve learned whatever lesson there is to learn in the past, the only way forward is through. Don’t spend time in self-incrimination, forgive yourself and stop dragging that baggage with you.

* Ditch your excuses – All the excuses why you procrastinate need to be set aside. Leave them with the baggage.

* Take Action – now that you have made a contract with yourself that you are not going to make excuses, what actions can you take to kill and prevent the same behavior in the future?

* Create accountability – tell people what you are doing when appropriate and ask them to hold you accountable. Let them know so that you are in fear of them asking how you are doing. Use technology such as apps or calendar reminders to journal your progress to force you to recognize if you are making progress or not.

* Optimize your environment – remove distractions (digital, television/radio, noise, junk in your desk) or put yourself in another place where you are most likely to complete your task.

* Break it down – sometimes we fail because the task is massive that it seems so overwhelming. Break down your tasks, set goals to complete each so that you can build momentum and make some progress.

* Take bold actions – Sometimes you are procrastinating because you are not sure that the next thing that you will do is the right thing. Sometimes it’s faster to just do the thing, screw it up and then fix it; rather than just sitting there and suffer analysis paralysis trying to figure out what it is that you should be doing.

* Be realistic on what it is that you can accomplish – sometimes we p...]]>

* LNIM Listener Feedback: We listen to a feedback from a listener and discuss how you should react, as content developers, if you get criticized based on the content that you are creating. My take is that you receive the feedback and refrain from being on the defensive. Thank the giver of the feedback instead and get the golden nugget in the message as there is a little bit of truth in everything that we say. Maybe the message is worth considering, so consider it. Hear your critics. Hear the core of what they are trying to say before totally blowing them off.

* Internet Marketing News: Facebook is spending a lot of money in advertising Facebook Live on television. Why? Facebook may be secretly concerned about this phenomenon called content collapse. This is when people are sharing less and less updates during the day so Facebook Live may be a project to get more original content in the platform again. The aspect of having this new feature in video translates to greater audience engagement and having it live gives a sense of urgency. Does Facebook Live make sense for you? For you to answer this, think about how your reach looks like and consider some of the main features: the content persists; you can download and repurpose; and if you can’t view live, you still get a pseudo-live webinar-like experience. Take a look and see if Facebook Live adds value to your business.

* Late Night Niche Site Update: I logged into Site Ground, created a hosting space for youthbaseballzone.com, pushed a button and installed WordPress. There should now be a very minimal landing page set up and I will be configuring WordPress a bit in the coming weeks, put some content to bring it to life so you would see what it looks like to build an affiliate niche site. https://www.latenightim.com/setting-2017-goals-lnim115/feed/ 0 It’s hard to believe, but it’s Thanksgiving Day in the United States (again) and time to start setting 2017 goals. It's seems like we were just here in this situation, but that was a year ago. This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, This year is no exception with the release of the release of the Achieve What Matters eBook (get it here). In that eBook, Michael interviews some amazing people to get their input on what it takes to achieve your goals for the coming year. You’ll love the eight critical tips in the ebook.
Achieve What Matters in 2017:

The 8 Strategies Super-Successful People

Are Using Now to Accomplish More Next Year

In the show, I discuss a couple of the ideas in the eBook that a particularly appropriate for Thanksgiving Day — if you want to read about all eight tips for setting 2017 goals, you’ll need to download the ebook.

Show Notes
2016 is not yet over! There are still a lot of things that you can accomplish and gain some ground on the competition during this holiday season. But it’s equally important to start turning your attention to building a plan for 2017. In Michael Hyatt’s book, Best Year Ever, Michael went out and talked to some famous people and asked them what their strategies are for accomplishing more next year than they did this year having their best year ever. Here are the key points that are worth sharing in the show:
Take the time to express gratitude for all the things that you have been able to accomplish this year. Sometimes we spend our time worrying about the broken stuff that we just don’t take the time to celebrate the successes we have. Today, Thanksgiving Day, up until the days leading up to the start of the New Year is the best time to take that time to be thankful. It would also be great to imagine and ask yourself: ‘What do I want to be thankful for next year?’ It’s great to be thankful for our blessings this year but it would also be a powerful idea to start having a vision what you will be thankful for next year. This is the first step in reaching your goals as it will propel you, all year long, to work for that vision to come to pass. Take your ideas and spend time envisioning your dreams that you would want to happen in 2017.

This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I talk about moving LateNightIM.com from the insecure http protocol to the secure https protocol that takes advant... I discuss the possible SEO advantages of the move and the way that I accomplished it using CloudFlare and a cool plugin called Really Simple SSL. Basically Google wants you to switch to HTTPS and they are apparently willing to give you a small search engine bump as an incentive,
In case you missed it, last week I discussed all about email marketing and the progress my buddy Cliff is making with ConvertKit. You can get the replay of the webinar that I mentioned right here.
Next week I’m planning on publishing an episode on Thanksgiving Day. Stay tuned.

Show Notes

* Late Night Listener Feedback: What is the best approach in embedding a video in ConvertKit? Know what it is that you want to accomplish: sending traffic to your website, getting people in your mailing list or building a presence elsewhere? Your answer lies there.
* Internet Marketing News: Penguin 4.0, Google’s real-time algorithm, is now going to start paying attention to unnatural outbound links. If your website has a bunch of do-follow links, Google will start reducing the authority of that page or issue manual spam penalties. If your site has this, you need to stop and get rid of these links, or mark them as no-follow.
* Moving to a Secure Transport Protocol –you might notice that in websites such as Amazon, instead of the normal HTTP, their site will say HTTPS with a lock icon in it. Hypertext transfer protocol is the language that computers use to talk to each other and to transfer information from a web server to a web browser so the information can go reliably from point A to point B. In using an HTTPS, you are sending your information in code as it is sent using a secure version of HTTP called secure socket layer (SSL) so no one can eavesdrop on the information that you are sending. Google has deemed it appropriate to give better rankings to websites which uses HTTPS so explains why I decided to switch even if I do not handle financial information. It is a signal to Google that you care about being a trusted website and you are offering the best possible experience to your readers. You have two options in switching to HTTPS:

* If you are using a webhost, you will notice that they support this directly so you can follow their instructions.
* Use reverse proxies such as CloudFlare so you can automatically get access to a generic security certificate and the Really Simple SSL Plugin.

Don’t forget to change your site details in Google Webmaster Tools (now called Google Search Console) and in Google Analytics when switching to https.. I show the Google Analytics case below. In Google Search Console, you just add another site (with https instead of http). I'd keep them both in there.

https://www.latenightim.com/convertkit-conversion/feed/ 0 ConvertKit conversion is happening all around us. No doubt that is because ConvertKit is simply the best email marketing platform for bloggers. So many of my friends are having so much success with this plugin, free email marketing webinar that ConvertKit is running this month).
This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I invite my friend Cliff Ravenscraft to the show to discuss his experience with ConvertKit over the last few weeks. We discuss his conversion from Aweber, his on boarding sequence, his sorting sequences and all of his other email plans.
What’s exciting about this discussion is not just what ConvertKit will make possible for Cliff in the future, but the information that he has already been able to learn about his audience. In the episode, Cliff talks about how almost all of his assumptions about his audience have been wrong for years, and exactly what he plans to do about it.
By the way, in case you missed it, last week I discussed the web host that we will be using for the Late Night Niche Site. I’m hoping to have another Niche Site Update before the end of November.
Next week I’m planning on more email marketing discussion. Some real tips that you can use to improve your own email marketing.
Hear what Cliff has to say about ConvertKit

Show Notes

The pain points in Cliff’s previous email list; the limitations of Aweber; what prompted him to take action and take his list to the next level; and what finally made him decide to switch.
What it was like to transition to ConvertKit and how easy it was to complete the migration.
How Cliff introduced his new email strategies to his existing email subscribers who had been with him for years but were only getting emailed for months at a time. From having a weekly newsletter responder sequence, an additional auto responder to filter through those who would not prefer getting more emails than what they have come to expect, to putting in link triggers and automation rules — he shares details of the buttons and tags which he decided to put in place for a more effective communication plan.
His objectives in coming up with a newsletter, the detailed steps that he went through when he incorporated internal surveys inside of his list and why he had added this feature in.
Why segmenting makes sense to ensure market-and-message match; and the myths that Cliff had busted when he removed incorrect assumptions about his audience.
How happy Cliff is with ConvertKit and its pricing details; the power and possibilities of the product’s plugins; and the ROI that he is forecasting brought about by effectively using ConvertKit.

Here is a picture of the email optin that Cliff has at the end of every post and page thanks to the ConvertKit plugin for WordPress that he mentioned. The “lead magnet” part of this is very clear — give Cliff your email in exchange for hist “best podcasting advice, tips, and strategies.”
I love this headline copy because it communicates that Cliff is not holding anything back (which is true). I could be better if Cliff would choose to incorporate more language about the “benefits” that people can expect from having that awesome advice at their fingertips.
Either way…this is way better than the old one.

And here’s a picture of that old optin. Check out the call to action.

https://www.latenightim.com/affiliate-website-hosting/feed/ 0 Technical issues like affiliate website hosting can often seem scary. They certainly don’t have to be. In this episode, I explain the different kinds of hosting you might choose to use for your affiliate site. If you are just starting out, SiteGround. I’m using SiteGround for several of my sites, and I really like it. We’ll be hosting the new niche site on SiteGround shared hosting, and in this episode I explain why.
My friend and mastermind colleague Ray Edwards published a video this week about why he stopped watching The Walking Dead. We discuss my thinking about why he might be on the right track. During the discussion, I recall one of my favorite quotes:
You are what you are and you are where you are because of what has gone into your mind. You change what you are and you change where you are by changing what goes into your mind.

* Zig Ziglar

Finally, I talk about the increasing importance of mobile for your website.
Next week I’m planning on continuing the niche site discussion, so be sure to stay tuned.

Show Notes

* Internet Marketing News – according to data, mobile devices have, for the first time in history, overtaken desktops as a place to get to the internet. This translates to you ensuring that your website is usable on mobile and that you provide an excellent mobile experience. It also failed to have a ‘mobile first’ strategy. Google will rate your site low if you do not have a responsive site for mobile users.
* The Late Night Niche Site Updates – We decided on our niche (Youth Baseball), we picked a domain name (com), now let’s figure out where our website is going to be housed. Here are things we need to consider:

* What to use to build your website:

* If you are building a site which is simple and needs to be up and running quickly, go with a company like Squarespace. It’s an affordable, no-fuss integrated builder.
* Another option is to build your website on WordPress using the blogging platform, Blogger. You are still using the actual WordPress software so you are subject to their guidelines and restrictions.
* For affiliate marketers, my recommendation is to use self-hosted WordPress. WordPress.com hosts WordPress for you but in the self-hosted version, WordPress.org provides a download of the WordPress software that you can put into your web hosting.

* Four Levels of Web Hosting Service

* Shared hosting – the least expensive but if you have bad neighbors, they can affect the performance of your website.
* Virtual Private Server (VPS) – shared hosting that uses sophisticated software that protects your resources.
* Dedicated Hosting – your site has its own space in the server farm.
* Cloud-based Hosting – multiple computers comprise your website. If one computer goes down, there are still other units which carry your load.

This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I share my content workflow and a couple of the tools that I use to keep things moving. We also discuss some listener feedback about show consistency.
By the way, in case you missed it, last week I discussed Imposter Syndrome. If you have ever wondered if you have enough expertise to publish on a topic, that is the show for you.
Next week I’m planning on talking about the Late Night Niche Site — so be sure and tune in for that one!

Show Notes
One of the key things in getting content out regularly is having great workflows. A workflow is a set of steps which you follow from start to finish in order to get something done. These steps can be overwhelming for those who are not working on their business full time so here are some tools which can dramatically improve how you organize things:
-Ulysses – best tool in organizing templated data. It’s made up of hierarchal organizational note cards which you can fill out, drag around and publish in different formats once you are done. It has a jigsaw-like ability which is nice for putting things together. With regard to workflow, I have created different cards for different parts of the show, made a template, duplicated them for each of the show and updated it as I go along. It is a plain text tool and syncs excellently across Apple devices.
-Sublime Text, One Note and Write Plus – the closest equivalent to Ulysses for those in the Windows platform.
-Zapier – an automation app that I use which monitors activity and when there is an activity, assigns specific people ‘tasks’ which, collectively, are called ‘zaps’. It’s a powerful tool and the user interface is fantastic.
Internet Marketing Fortune Cookie : “You will soon be the center of attention.”
I mentioned a review in the episode. Here is a screen shot of it.

Here is that tweet from the good folks at Zapier that lets you know how to pronounce (hint — Zapier rhymes with Happier).

How do you pronounce Zapier? It rhymes with happier. 🙂
Zapier makes you happier.
— Zapier (@zapier) September 3, 2014

Regarding Zapier, here is a screen shot (also promised in the episode). In this shot, you can see my new podcast episode automation. This is the actual automation that will trigger when this episode is published.

I promised you a screen shot of Ulysses. You can see the three columns and you can see that in this picture I am actually typing this very sentence! How cool is that? The application is really growing on me, and I am starting to use it for more and more stuff.

https://www.latenightim.com/become-an-expert-lnim110/feed/ 1 Learn how to become and expert in your niche and absolutely crush imposter syndrome. It turns out that expertise is relative, and that you can help people that don’t know the things that you know – even if you don’t think that you know much. I give some concrete examples — including something that came up in conversation with my buddy Cliff. That example shows exactly how to turn a tiny amount of expertise into thousands of dollars.
There are some clear steps that you can take to become an expert, and they are revealed in the episode as well.
Last week, I discussed some simple SEO tips for your content — if you missed that you will want to go get the free cheat sheet. It’s something you should keep by your side when writing content for the web.
Next week we’ll be talking about my podcast workflow. I’ll discuss tools and tips that you can use in your business to be more efficient (including some cool automation).

Show Notes — Use These Notes To Become An Expert
So, you have decided that you want to build an internet business and you like the idea of helping people. The question now is..how do you mean to become an expert? Here is my set of tips for you:

* Understand exactly what it is that you want to become an expert in. It’s hard to become an expert and you have to invest time, so you have to be sure that the field you have chosen is something that you really like. If you are an accountant because you have experience in accounting but hate the thought of being one, being an expert in accounting may not be a very good choice. On the other hand, even if you don’t know a thing about playing a guitar, but you want to teach people about playing one, it’ll be easy to talk to folks about your journey towards becoming a guitar player.

* Niche down. What will you focus on? Bass, Acoustic, electric? Strumming, plucking? Blues, country, rock and roll? If you are trying to become an expert, the more you niche down, the better off you will be because the scope of your material that you need to claim expertise in, gets smaller. For a marketing standpoint, this is also valuable because you specifically address a very narrow segment.

* Dig in. You cannot just fake it until you make it. You have to study and practice. Be completely transparent as there is no reason at all to pretend to know more than you do. Expertise is relative, people are going to self-select. Study your craft, find mentors, follow people and practice what you preach.

* Make a helpful noise. Get out there and start sharing what you learned. Advocate for your customers by creating content. You can do this by publishing articles, creating a blog post, appearing in podcasts, speaking in front of people, etc. all the while collecting experiences and more knowledge which may get you that label to finally be able to write a book. It will also trigger trust in people and will be associated with other experts.

Remove whatever limitation is hindering you, crush your self-doubt and go help people!

Once your site ranks well in Google, it’s like turning on a traffic faucet that you can’t ever turn off.
Google has made a lot of changes over the last five year to combat internet marketers (like me and others far worse than me) who have tried to manipulate the search engine rankings to their advantage. Those days are (mostly) behind us, and the best strategy today is to simply to write the best content you possibly can and present it in a manner that makes it easy for Google to recognize it as such.
To help you with that, I’ve included a blog post SEO checklist. Look for the download button further down in the show notes to get your free copy.
In case you missed it, last week I discussed how to pick a domain name in episode 108. So, these two episodes go together pretty well. Once you get a domain up and running, you’re going to want to have content on that domain ranking in Google (and Bing too, for that matter).
Next week I’m planning on boosting your confidence a little. I’ll be talking about Imposter Syndrome and how you are probably already an expert in your niche. You won’t want to miss that next week.

SEO Tips For Bloggers Show Notes
Know what keywords your post is targeting – Imagine the ideal keyword phrase that a searcher would type in Google and if they will be delighted to open that site when Google delivers that to them. It should be the keyword phrase that you should be targeting.
Have multiple versions of your keywords in your post – Google is looking for human-like conversations so place variations of your keywords in your post. If you are targeting suede shoes, for example, you can place ‘light blue suede shoes’ or ‘azure leather shoes (suede)’. To research related phrases use UberSuggest.com.
Have the best content for your keywords – Ensure that you have the best content for your keywords because Google’s search engine’s job is to find the best content. Even if you don’t outrank some other junkie sites today, if your content is the best, Google will make that sure that someday, you will.
Have more words that your competition – Your content should be in long form. Put your keywords in, look at the competition, see many words they have on their page, and work on making yours longer.
Your main keywords should be in the Title Tag and in the Post Slug – If your article in about blue suede shoes, these words should be in your article’s title as these are the words that searchers are typing. At the end of that address in the website name is the page name or the post slug. You’ll also want to be in the URL address that people have to type in to go directly to your page so make sure you have your keywords in your title.
Have a compelling SEO title – Optimize your title for keyword placement but also write in a way that will intrigue your audience to check you site out.
Have a compelling description – The same thing that is true for SEO title goes for descriptions. The main difference is that descriptions are not considered in the ranking algorithm. But, searchers are read those descriptions and decide if they should click through to your site through what you write.
Have outbound authority links – It satisfies Google as it establishes that you are a real website with real authority in what you are talking about. Make sure you link to sites that are related but don’t directly compete with you.

https://www.latenightim.com/choosing-domain-name-lnim018/feed/ 0 This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, we focus on choosing a domain name for the Late Night Night Niche Site. How to choose a domain name is a question that I get a lot, so I am hoping that this live example will help people. In the new segment, we keep track of the evolving Google Penguin 4.0 SEO story. It looks like things are finally settling down. The two major takeaways are that Penguin is now dynamic (it can be updated week to week or day to day) and backlink penalties seem to be a thing of the past.
Next week, I’m planning on tackling SEO for 2017 — what you need to know in light of the Penguin 4.0 updates and more. You’ll want to make sure you don’t miss that episode.
Are you making good progress this month? In case you missed it, last week I discussed how to get the most out of the end of the year — even if you are off track on your goals.

Show Notes
Here are the highlights of the things I have shared in this episode:

* Internet Marketing News: The new Penguin 4.0 is out and about! This is a real time algorithm which means Google can update the software live and this version will do away with penalties associated with spammy links.
* Late Night Niche Site Update: We decided to pick Youth Baseball as our niche to work on as it met criteria that we set in our previous episodes and the next step is picking a domain name. So what are the things we should consider in picking one? I have come up with the ultimate checklist in choosing a domain name (you can download that list by clicking the yellow button below) but here are the highlights:
* The characteristics of a good domain name:

* People will look at the search results and check if your URL looks spammy, if it’s related to what they are searching for or if it sounds professional, so choose one that is solid and makes sense. A catchy domain name will also improve your click through rate.
* Your website’s URL should be something which can be remembered.
* Your domain name should not be something which needs explanation or which needs to be spelled thoroughly.
* Your URL should not violate trademark law. Do due diligence – you can hire an attorney to do trademark search, use tools such as LegalZoom or at the very least, Google it!
* Get a .com. It’s not a rule but SEO-wise, I recommend that it is best to stay with a .com
* Check your domain name for availability on social media.

* Unveiling our domain name for this project in our Late Night Niche Site: Youthbaseballzone.com (Wohooo!)

https://www.latenightim.com/finish-year-strong/feed/ 0 This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I talk about how to finish the year strong. We all started out with grand plans this year. In many cases (for example, in my cases especially), those plans just didn’t pan out the way we planned. A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how to get back on track by leveraging the “Science of Achievement.” It’s all boils down to realistically assessing your situation and moving forward toward a new vision. When you do a realistic assessment of this year, you suddenly realize that there are three entire months left!
The question is, what are you going to do with that time? That’s what we discuss in this episode. I reveal a number of steps that you can take to finish they year strong.
In case you missed it, last week I discussed discussed Copyright Law as it applies to affiliate marketing. Be sure to check it out — I gave you some homework in that episode that you need to complete (if you haven’t already).
And stay tuned for next week — I’m planning on choosing a domain name for the Late Night Niche Site. I’ll take you through the entire process.
I hope you enjoy this week’s episode and that this helps you finish the year strong.

Show Notes
Here are the highlights of the things I have shared in this episode:

* Internet Marketing News: Last week, we talked about the chatter around the Google algorithm updates and some signals did intensify this week and there were indications that there are more fluctuations in Google which has not settle yet. But as expected, Google’s Public Relations team wouldn’t directly comment. These changes aren’t something you should be worried though so stick to the same advice that I have given: concentrate on making great content and don’t worry so much about Google algorithms.
* What is your two-minute drill for 2016? With three months left in 2016, will you push to accomplish what you planned? Or just coast through the rest of the year just to be done with it and just start again next year? It’s great to look forward to next year but why not hit it with a running start by ensuring that this last quarter ends with a bang? Here are tips to finish this year strong:

* Totally forgive yourself – There is no time for self-doubt or self-flagellation so forget about that. Once you acknowledge where you are and own it, move forward.
* Stop procrastinating – ignore television shows, ignore sports, ignore your distractions and do something about your goals.
* Start small – have small wins. Finish those few easy, annoying tasks to get them off of your plate.
* Get your space cleared – unclutter. Whether the clutter is from your hard drive, your inbox, your physical desk or your mind — get them out.
* Reconnect with your goals and decide what you can own from today until the end of the year – Be realistic. Take into consideration the holidays and other legitimate obstacles and figure out what are those that you can actually do.
* Leverage on your support teams – let your mentors, Mastermind groups, etc. know what you are doing.
* Amplify your opportunity for success by making incremental increases in your health and fitness – start small, maybe walking 20-30 minutes every morning to get your brain going or committing a certain number of steps in your Fit Bit or Apple Watch.
* Put together a plan – take your original plan and modify it to fit your current timeline.

]]> https://www.latenightim.com/affiliate-marketing-copyright-law-lnim106/feed/ 0 This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, I talk all about affiliate marketing copyright law in the United States. More specifically, it’s a discussion about US Copyright Law in general and how it applies to affiliate marketers like us. Now, as you know, I am not a lawyer, and I don’t even play one on TV. As I mention in the episode, if you need legal advice about your site or the law, you should consult a licensed attorney. The purpose of this episode is to educate you about the issues, so that you know what questions to ask, and what trouble might be lurking out there.
We also note some SEO trends recently reported in the news. The “SEO Weather Forecast” has rising temperatures, and that probably means that Google is making changes to the search algorithm (again). There may even be some indication that RankBrain (Google’s artificial intelligence technology) is involved.
Finally, in case you missed it, last week I discussed how to get back on track. So, if you are off track and missed that episode, I recommend that you go check it out.
Next week I’m planning on talking about how to make a successful end of the year push — but getting back on track is a prerequisite for that.

Show Notes
Here are the highlights of the things I have shared in this episode:

* Internet Marketing News: You may have heard that there is activity in Google’s search engine optimization ranking and I am telling you that these updates are ongoing and are happening every day. I read in an article that if we add all the discreet changes that Google is making, coupled with the statements they make out of Google headquarters, it is estimated that 500 or so tweaks to the Google algorithms happen every year. It’s almost a couple per day. Thereby, tweaking your content specifically for Google is folly. Do things which can make Google love you but as far as trying to trick the system, that is craziness. Whatever you do today might not work tomorrow so it’s bad business.

* Copyright Infringement:

* What is copyright? – It is the right to control work that you create. It gives you exclusive rights to reproduce your work, to distribute copies of your work, to perform the work, and to display the work publicly unless you willingly give them up. There are no exemptions to that so anyone who is copying your work without your permission is violating copyright laws.
* How can you get a copyright? – Generally, in the US, you don’t need to file a copyright in order for something to be protected; it just needs to be fixed in tangible medium of expression where it can be perceived, reproduced or communicated. This is copyright by fixation. You get the protection of copyright without the formalities which used to be required.
* Will you get caught? – As a general rule, you should assume that a work is protected. Whatever it is that you are considering copying, your ability to copy it means it’s fixed somewhere thereby if you use that and publish it somewhere else, you are in violation of the copyright law. Even if you’re a small website using one photo from somewhere, the more important the internet gets, the more likely it is that you are going to get caught. The ability to search the internet for pictures, for example, is getting more and more complicated and there are firms who make money doing this.
* How about fair use? – In deciding between fair use and infringement, judges would use The Four Factor test: the purpose and character of your use; the nature of the copyrighted work; the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and the effect of the use upon the potential market.

* Take Action: Identify something that you have been meaning to do this week that will move your business forward and commit to have that thing done ...]]>
