It’s easy to think and imagine in our heads how our dream life looks like. Thinking about that dream house, or that dream job or your dream business – all of those are within your reach but it won’t be as easy as 1-2-3 because sometimes life does get in the way. And sometimes we let the stuff that’s going on in our lives, like the basketball practices, fixing dinner, helping with homework, chores, our day jobs and the stress that comes with it all, get in the way of our big dreams.

Let’s take a step back and ask, is that okay? We immediately tag ourselves “too busy” or not having the time, the focus, or the energy for working on our dreams and we can’t let our current life and struggles get in the way of achieving our dreams.

Dr. Stephen R. Covey, the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, in one of his talks discussed a paradigm shift into helping you meet big things and managing the little things. In this talk, he symbolizes the big things with big rocks and the little things with pebbles and that we are all trying to fit into one jar. He discusses that by putting in the big rocks a.k.a. your big things first, you’ll be able to fit in the pebbles a.k.a. your little things in the jar or our life.

Often times, when we are in a situation where we have so many things to do, we get overwhelmed and start doing all the little things with the hopes that when we finish them we can get back to working on the big things. Sometimes it works, sometimes the little things we need to do just start piling up and we end up having to put aside the big things or we get so overwhelmed that we no longer have the time, focus, or energy in working on the bigger things. So, do you know what your big rocks are? Are they your dreams? Your passion projects? Your time with family?

Here’s an exercise you can do to identify your big rocks, if you haven’t done so already.

Sit down and write down 25 things that you really want in your life. You don’t have to overthink it. It can be just anything that you want to achieve or something that you really want in your life. Maybe you dream about having an amazing car or taking a good long vacation, saving enough money for your kids to go to college, completely paying off your debts. It can be absolutely anything.

Read them back and identify the most important ones. They don’t have to be exactly what you’ve written down, you can find clues about what our big rocks are or your actual big rocks will be on that list.

Start putting in your big rocks first. Set aside your small pebbles, and really focus on action items that you can do slowly to achieve your big rocks.

Whatever you decide your big rocks to be, it is very important for you to know that as crazy as it may seem to others, they are completely valid and they are completely okay. Continue putting in the hard work in meeting those big rocks one by one, manage your small rocks, and don’t forget to have fun along the way. At the end of the day, what matters most when you have all those big rocks met, is the journey and the learnings that came along with it.
