Getting started online can be overwhelming. The simple question people often ask is “where to start.” Almost always, my answer is to start with affiliate marketing. Invariably, the next question is “why affiliate marketing”? My answer to that question is the subject of this week's Internet Marketing Minute.

On the last episode of the Internet Marketing Minute we talked about affiliate marketing and I described affiliate marketing as a process where you match offers with buyers and as a result of that you get paid a commission.

If you listen to my show at LateNightInternetMarketing.com or read my blog, you’ll know that a lot of times, in fact practically all the time, when people ask me how to get started with an internet based business I recommend some form of affiliate marketing. The question for this week is, “Why is affiliate marketing the best place to start when you’re trying to build a business online?”

The answer to this question comes in two parts. The first part is affiliate marketing is easy enough to be successful at it even if you don’t have an enormous amount of experience, you can have some chance of being successful if you work at it and have a good plan. I’m not recommending that people go out and build the next Amazon, I’m not telling people to go out and start WebMD.

Usually what I’m recommending is that people start small websites about something that they care about and monetize those websites with affiliate marketing. That’s something that people can get their mind around and be successful. So the first reason that I recommend people get started online with affiliate marketing is that it’s something that is achievable and that they can get their head around and really understand.

The second reason is really more important. The second reason that I recommend people get started with affiliate marketing is that affiliate marketing forces people to learn fundamental internet business skills that will serve them no matter what they do next in their internet business journey.

Let me give you some examples. Usually affiliate marketers learn to analyze markets and pick niches. They do keyword research and eventually they decide on a product niche that they think will be profitable. In the process of doing that they find affiliate offers that will match their niche and they try to assess these affiliate offers and determine whether or not they’ll be profitable.

Once they’ve done all of that, they learn how to buy a domain name, get a website up and running, usually they learn to use WordPress or some equivalent website platform. Once they have the website up and running they learn how to create fantastic content that is helpful to readers and monetize that content with affiliate links.

When they’re doing that they learn the art of pre-selling and conversions, and other marketing techniques that will be valuable to them no matter what they do in the future. I also usually recommend that affiliate marketers learn how to build a list, so they learn how to build an autoresponder and maintain customers through email marketing.

Finally, affiliate marketers need to learn how to find traffic. Sometimes they do that by buying ads and sometimes they do it organically, most times both. As you can see, affiliate marketing is a fantastic place to start your online journey because you learn so much about so many different aspects of internet marketing that you can take forward into your next online journey.
