MLM and Multi-Level Marketing: What You Need to Know

Multi-level marketing, commonly known as MLM, is one of the most debated business models in the entrepreneurial world. Whether you are considering joining an MLM company or just want to understand the landscape, here is an honest assessment based on nearly two decades of observing the internet marketing industry.

How MLM Works

In a multi-level marketing structure, independent distributors sell products directly to consumers while also recruiting new distributors. You earn money from your own sales and from a percentage of the sales made by your recruited network. This layered compensation structure is what gives MLM its name.

The Honest Assessment

Some MLM companies sell quality products and provide a genuine business opportunity. However, the industry as a whole has significant challenges. Research from the Federal Trade Commission consistently shows that the vast majority of MLM participants either make no money or lose money. The companies that survive long-term tend to be the ones where product sales to end consumers — not recruitment — drive the majority of revenue.

Questions to Ask Before Joining

  • Would you buy the products at full price even if there were no business opportunity attached?
  • What percentage of revenue comes from product sales to non-participants versus from new recruit purchases?
  • What is the average income for participants at your expected level of effort?
  • Are there inventory requirements or monthly purchase minimums?

Alternative Paths

For most part-time entrepreneurs, business models like affiliate marketing, content creation, and digital products offer better control, lower risk, and more scalable income potential. These models let you build equity in your own brand rather than someone else's, and they do not require you to recruit friends and family into a business structure.

Whatever path you choose, go in with open eyes and realistic expectations.
