I know what you are thinking. Diet advice on an internet marketing blog? But after nearly two decades of building businesses while sitting in front of a computer, I can tell you that what you eat has a direct impact on the quality of your work.
This is not about weight loss. It is about performance.
The Entrepreneur's Nutrition Problem
Internet entrepreneurs have some of the worst dietary habits of any profession. We sit for hours. We snack on whatever is within arm's reach. We skip meals when we are in the zone and then overeat when we finally come up for air. We drink too much coffee and not enough water. We eat at our desks while answering emails.
I am not going to pretend I have always been a model of healthy eating. But I have noticed a clear pattern over the years: when I eat better, I work better. It is that simple.
Why Diet Affects Your Business
The connection between nutrition and cognitive performance is well established. Here is what happens when you clean up your diet, even modestly:
- Stable blood sugar means stable focus. The afternoon crash that kills your productivity is almost always a blood sugar crash. When you eat balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs instead of sugar and processed food, your energy stays consistent throughout the day.
- Better mood, better decisions. Your gut and your brain are connected more directly than most people realize. Improving your diet often improves your mood, making you more optimistic, more resilient, and better equipped to handle the inevitable setbacks of building a business.
- Fewer physiological distractions. When your body is not fighting indigestion, inflammation, or fatigue from poor nutrition, you can bring your full attention to your work. That focus translates directly into better output.
Simple Changes That Make a Real Difference
You do not need to overhaul your entire diet overnight. Start with a few practical changes:
- Replace one snack a day. Swap the chips or candy for fruit, nuts, or something with actual nutritional value. One substitution. That is all.
- Drink more water. Dehydration causes fatigue, headaches, and reduced concentration. Keep a water bottle at your desk and actually use it.
- Eat a real breakfast. Your brain needs fuel in the morning. If you are an intermittent fasting person, that is fine, but make sure your first meal of the day is substantial and nutritious.
- Stop eating at your desk. Take ten minutes to eat without a screen in front of you. The break itself is as valuable as the food.
These are small changes. But small changes in what you eat compound into big changes in how you think, how you focus, and how effectively you work on your business.

I think this should really be part of a motivational tip because without proper care for your body how can you have the energy and the right mindset to do things that you want to do. Kudos to this post!
Good stuff Mark. The two tips I can chime in with diet – both of which really helped me – are 1) Add a basic protein to your breakfast such as a slice of lean turkey, and consume as little sugar as possible at breakfast, i.e. – put a turkey slice on your bagle rather than jam; 2) I substituted a protein shake at 9-9:30 a.m. for my second cup of coffee. Both have helped me significantly for almost a decade now – and both were doctor recommended!
