When I sat down to write my first ebook in 2008, I had been doing internet marketing for about six months. I was still working my day job as an engineer, and I distinctly remembered the overwhelming confusion of being brand new to online business. Terms like squeeze page, SEO, WordPress, and autoresponder had been completely foreign to me just months earlier.
So I decided to write the resource I wished I had found when I started — a simple guide covering the ten most important things every new internet marketer should know. I was determined to keep it under twenty pages and make it genuinely useful rather than a thinly disguised sales pitch.
Why Writing an Ebook Matters for Your Business
That ebook taught me more about content creation and online business than almost anything else I did in my first year. Here is why creating a digital resource is still one of the best moves you can make.
It Forces You to Organize Your Knowledge
When you try to write down what you know in a structured way, you quickly discover the gaps in your understanding. Writing my ebook forced me to think clearly about what actually mattered for beginners versus what was just noise. That clarity improved everything else I created afterward.
It Establishes Your Voice
My ebook was not revolutionary. The information was available elsewhere. But it was written in my voice, from my perspective, based on my recent experience as a beginner. That authenticity resonated with readers who were in the same position I had been in months earlier. Your unique perspective is your competitive advantage, even when the information itself is not unique.
It Builds Your Email List
I gave the ebook away in exchange for an email address. This is the classic lead magnet strategy, and it works as well in 2026 as it did in 2008. The tools have changed — from basic Aweber forms to sophisticated platforms like ConvertKit and Beehiiv — but the principle is the same. Offer something valuable, earn permission to stay in touch.
Technology Keeps Getting Easier
One thing I remember being amazed by in 2008 was a voice-to-text service that could transcribe voicemails into emails. It felt like science fiction at the time. Today, we have AI writing assistants, voice-to-text that works in real time on every phone, and tools that can help you outline, draft, and format an ebook in a fraction of the time it used to take.
The barrier to creating content has never been lower. But the value of creating content that genuinely helps people has never been higher. Do not let the ease of AI-generated content fool you into thinking that quality does not matter. Your readers can tell the difference between something written with care and something generated by a prompt.
Getting Started with Your First Ebook
If you have been thinking about writing a free guide, a short ebook, or any digital resource for your audience, here is my advice: just start. Do not wait until you feel like an expert. Do not wait until you have the perfect outline. Write what you know right now, keep it short and practical, and get it in front of people. You can always update it later.
My first ebook was far from perfect, but it built my first email list and gave me confidence that I had something worth sharing. That momentum carried me forward into everything else — including the podcast that eventually became my primary platform.

Looking forward to helping promote your eBook. LOL!!!! Get ‘R dun!!!!
As far as Jott.com goes… man, didn’t you just spend money on software that does the same thing?? Jott, indeed, is awesome! I signed up for it yesterday when ShoeMoney made is little Jott post. I thought to myself what was that and then I realized it was a test post for Jott on his blog. Needless to say, I signed up right away.
Keep up in the loop with the eBook… look forward to covering a small post about it on GCDC. Take care.

Thanks, Garry.
Well, I did purchase Dragon Naturally Speaking, and I am using it on my PC (especially for blogging). It works great.
This is similar software that works on from a phone. So, if you are in the car and need to remember something, you can call Jott and you will end up with an email. Pretty handy. It’s like having a recorder with you all the time that transcribes automatically.
Regards,
Mark
Ahh… yes, big difference between the two. I just validated my phone number and will be giving Jott a try soon. I like the fact that you can link it up with your Twitter account. Now that’s pretty cool.
Hey Mark,
I can’t wait until the new ebook comes out. As Garry said, I’ll do what I can to help you promote it.
I’m going to go check jott.com out.
Tell you what. Instead of you just sending me a free copy, how about we trade. A copy of your book for a full book review on my site. Deal?
@Garry Cool! Glad to hear that you signed up for Jott. that is some really cool technology. As many posts as you crank out every day, I’m surprised you’re ever away from the computer long enough to need something like Jott. LOL
@Christine thanks Christine. I’m trying to write something that I wish I would’ve found when I got started. I don’t expect I’ll win a Pulitzer Prize or anything like that. But, I do want to create something that will help people who are trying to start an Internet business or make money online. I think it’s pretty hard to get started because there’s just so much information out there. Anyway, thanks for the comments. I’ll be sure to send you a free copy of the free e-book. LOL
Great news about the book. I am enjoying your blog very much.
That tool is bloody cool. I don’t use a mobile phone anymore so probably won’t find a use for it right now.
