Mark shares a quick behind-the-scenes vlog recorded on his drive to Podcamp Dallas, where he has been invited to speak. This was one of his first speaking engagements, and the excitement is genuine.
What This Vlog Covers
It is a Saturday morning just before 8:00 AM, and Mark is southbound on the Dallas North Tollway headed to Podcamp Dallas. He was invited to speak by the event organizer Gary, and he spent the previous night finishing his slides.
The significance of this moment is not lost on him. As a part-time internet marketer with a day job, dedicating an entire Saturday to a speaking event is a meaningful commitment. His wife supported the decision, which Mark acknowledges matters when you are building something on the side of a family life with four kids.
Several listeners had already reached out to let Mark know they would be attending, including some he had never met face to face. He was also expecting to meet members of Cliff Ravenscraft's podcast community who had heard him on Cliff's show.
Gary planned to record the sessions, so Mark hoped to share video from the event on his blog afterward.
Key Takeaways
- Speaking at events builds authority and deepens your connection with your audience
- Say yes to opportunities that stretch you, even when they cost you a Saturday
- Having a supportive partner makes part-time entrepreneurship sustainable
- Meeting your online audience in person strengthens relationships in ways that digital cannot
What's Changed Since This Post
Mark published this in October 2013. Podcasting conferences and unconferences like Podcamp have largely been replaced by larger industry events like Podcast Movement, and by virtual summits that became standard after 2020. The advice about showing up in person remains relevant. In-person networking still creates deeper professional relationships than any amount of online interaction.

I have a guess how Gary found out about you…. 🙂
Heard your presentation stole the show! Kick ass man, can’t wait to see the video!
Thanks man. I thought it might have been you. Owe you (another) one.
It was really fun — but you guys were a tough act to follow.
“This one time at Podcamp…” Oh great, Mark! Now I’m gonna be saying that all day! Sheesh!
Don’t know how I got so behind on your blog – there are like 3 or 4 posts that I missed. Happy to be catching up. Wish I still lived there – there are so many events now. When I was there, I think there was only one event on 35 near Downtown, maybe it was a Joel Comm thing. I can’t remember, just have a picture in my head of where it was. And nope, I didn’t make it to that.
Of course, B’ham is hopping but my van is “resting”. Ha!
Will be awesome to get to see your talk!
Would be great to see you in Dallas again…thanks for dropping in. Glad that made you laugh….I love that movie.
