We talk casually about websites, email lists, and digital products as if they are the most natural things in the world. But underneath it all, the entire internet marketing ecosystem runs on something invisible — the controlled flow of electrons through semiconductor circuits smaller than bacteria.

The Technology Behind Internet Marketing

In my day job, I spent decades as a semiconductor engineer. I helped build the chips that power the computers, phones, and servers that make the internet possible. This gave me a unique perspective on internet marketing — I understood the technology stack from the silicon all the way up to the WordPress theme.

Most internet marketers never think about what happens between clicking publish and a reader seeing their content. And they do not need to. But understanding just how remarkable the underlying technology is can give you a fresh appreciation for what we get to do as online entrepreneurs.

How Small is Small?

The circuits inside a modern computer chip are almost incomprehensibly tiny. A single transistor — the basic building block that stores and processes the ones and zeros that make computing possible — is far smaller than a bacterium. Thousands of them could fit on a human hair.

Back in 2000, I gave presentations showing electron microscope images of transistor features sitting on a human hair magnified ten thousand times. The tiny structures visible at that magnification were several transistors wide. Since then, the semiconductor industry has shrunk those features by roughly a factor of fifty. The chips in your phone today contain billions of transistors, each one switching on and off billions of times per second.

When someone asked me how we made stuff that small, my answer was always the same — very carefully.

What This Means for Internet Marketing

Every blog post you publish, every email you send, every podcast episode you release, every transaction your online store processes — all of it depends on these impossibly small structures managing the flow of electrons. Your entire online business exists because engineers figured out how to etch patterns smaller than bacteria onto silicon wafers.

I find this genuinely inspiring. The barriers to building an online business have never been lower. For less than the cost of a nice dinner, you can have a website that reaches the entire world, powered by technology that would have seemed like science fiction just a few decades ago.

The Real Internet Marketing Meaning

Here is the deeper point. The technology that enables internet marketing is a modern miracle. The fact that a part-time entrepreneur can sit at home after putting the kids to bed, publish a piece of content, and have it reach thousands of people around the world by morning — that is extraordinary. We should not take it for granted.

But the technology is just the infrastructure. The internet marketing meaning that matters is what you build on top of it. The businesses you create. The people you help. The problems you solve. The freedom you earn by building something of value online.

Electrons do not care what you build. They will faithfully carry your message regardless. The meaning comes from you.
