You know you need a lead magnet.  Why don’t you have one?  If you have one, why don’t you have more?  In this episode, I discuss why you should be collecting emails and how to do it.  I explain how to figure out what lead magnet to create, how to create the lead magnet, how to get it online, and how to get traffic to your lead magnet.

Something you’ll hear all the time is that leads are the lifeblood of your business. Another overused catchphrase that you hear is that the money is on the list.

What do all these people mean? Why is it that a list is so important?

I believe that email is still the best way to contact people. Email marketing is one of the very few ways where you can actually directly control or have the most direct control over communication with your customers. After all of these different social media programs, it’s still true that sending an email is one of the most likely ways that you’re going to reach potential clients.

The second thing: when your email list is yours, that’s something that you own, that’s an asset in your business. You can download those email addresses from your email service provider, you can print them out, and you can keep them and have them. If something happens to your business or your online platforms, this list of email addresses is something that you can walk away with.

One of the other reasons to have a lead magnet and an email list is in order to get people to take direct action. A lot of times you can build a lead magnet with the purpose of converting a sale directly.

What is this lead magnet thing?

A lead magnet is a thing that you give away in exchange for someone’s email. People will not just give away their email addresses unless you give them a reason to. And one of them is if you’re going to give them something of greater value than their email address is to them.

How can I create a lead magnet?

Problem #1: “I don’t know what to create.”

Figure out what your big thing is that you help people with. You can take that big idea and break it down into areas. Narrow it down to the steps that you what to have people do. Once you have broken that down, pick the most exciting one. What is a detail in those subtopics that you can teach someone that will give them a quick win? That’s what your lead magnet can be.

Problem #2: “I don’t know how to create it.”

You can just turn on your iPhone or my Zoom camera and record a simple thing that explains what it is that you want to teach. In this day and age, video is more effective because you can say, “I have this amazing video for you and I’m going to tell you exactly how to do _____.”

If you don’t want to be in front of the camera, record audio over a slide deck or write a nice blog post (a PDF).

Problem #3: “I don’t know how to get it online.”

My personal favorite for creating lead magnets that is absolutely drop-dead simple is Groove but you can also use tools such as LeadPages, WordPress, Thrive, Divi, SquareSpace, ConvertKit — whatever your tool is, just go make a landing page.

You have to have a hook, make a promise, describe what they’re going to get, and then ask for their email address.

Problem #4: “I don’t know how to get people to it”.

Traffic is everywhere. Traffic is out there. There are billions of people on the internet every day. Go find 100 or 1,000 of them and get them on your list. All we’re talking about is siphoning off a tiny bit of the traffic on the internet.

Go out and help people one at a time in some way in Facebook groups. Don’t just be spamming them with the link. A great way to start the relationship is to first help them with no strings attached and then offer them the lead magnet and only give it to them if they ask for it.

Have a website, a Twitter account, a Facebook page, and make sure this lead magnet is out there and available and that you’re talking about it in those places.

Feature this lead magnet on your website. Find articles that you’ve written in the past that are possibly ranking in Google at this time and add links to the lead magnet directly into those pages. Consider whether or not you want opt-in boxes somewhere on your site to allow them to directly opt-in.

Those are the four steps that you can do today. Even if you’ve never done this before, it’s totally achievable.
