Hook

Your son just called you out for listening to business podcasts instead of building the business. Sound familiar? In this episode, I address the learning-versus-doing trap with the concept of just-in-time learning, then give you my current recommendations for keyword research tools — including why I now prefer Ahrefs over traditional keyword tools.

What You Will Learn

  • How to break the cycle of consuming content instead of taking action
  • Why traditional keyword tools like Keyword Canine and Market Samurai have been replaced
  • The case for Ahrefs as an all-in-one keyword research and competitor analysis tool

Episode Summary

Just-in-Time Learning

Listener Lorien shared that her son called her out: “Mom, stop listening to podcasts about growing your business and actually make the business.” She raises a valid point. At some point, learning has to become doing.

The solution is just-in-time learning, a concept from Jeremy Frandsen at Internet Business Mastery. Identify the single most important next step in your business. Limit your learning to that one thing. If you are not ready for webinars yet because you have not picked a niche, skip the webinar episode and focus on niche selection. Save everything else for later.

We all fall into this trap because passive learning is easier than active doing. There is often procrastination and fear underneath it. Combat that by focusing only on what you need to do next.

Keyword Research Tool Recommendations

Listener James asked for updated keyword tool recommendations since older tools like Keyword Canine are gone. Here is the current landscape:

  • Long Tail Pro is a solid traditional keyword tool. Originally created by Spencer Haws, it analyzes keywords one at a time, estimates difficulty and search volume. Good for beginners on a budget.
  • Ahrefs is my top recommendation for an all-in-one solution. It has indexed billions of pages and trillions of links. Its Keyword Explorer returns far more keyword suggestions than traditional tools. And because it was built for backlink analysis, you can deeply analyze why competitors rank and reverse-engineer their link profiles.

Why Ahrefs wins: Traditional keyword tools relied on Google's Keyword Planner data, which has become increasingly restricted. Ahrefs crawls the web independently, giving you richer data. You get keyword discovery, difficulty scoring, competitor analysis, and backlink research in one tool instead of needing two or three separate subscriptions.

Key Takeaways

  1. Just-in-time learning prevents analysis paralysis. Learn only what you need for your next step.
  2. Traditional keyword tools have limitations. Google has restricted the data these tools rely on.
  3. Ahrefs is the best all-in-one keyword and competitor analysis tool. More expensive than Long Tail Pro but eliminates the need for multiple tools.
  4. Reverse-engineer competitor rankings. The real power of keyword research is understanding why competitors rank and building a better backlink profile.

What Has Changed Since This Episode

  • Ahrefs has added more features. Site audit, content explorer, and rank tracking are now included, making it an even more comprehensive SEO suite.
  • AI has transformed keyword research. Tools can now identify search intent and topic clusters, not just individual keywords.
  • Google SGE and AI Overviews. Search results now include AI-generated summaries, changing how content ranks and gets traffic.
