In Episode 044, Mark discusses three topics: the Corn Sheller affiliate site case study update, a practical guide to Google's new Disavow Tool, and his response to Pat Flynn's episode about what he wished he had known as a new business owner.
What You'll Learn in This Episode
- How to use Google's Disavow Tool to recover from link penalties
- Corn Sheller site earnings and metrics update
- WordPress.com stats versus Google Analytics for quick site health checks
- Five things Mark wishes he had known when starting internet marketing
Episode Show Notes
Mark opens with a personal update about being up all night with his sick three-year-old daughter, then dives into three content segments.
Corn Sheller Site: The case study site continues earning approximately $50 per month through the eBay Partner Network, with lifetime earnings exceeding $200. Mark plans to add YouTube video summaries and fresh content to push toward $100 per month.
Google Disavow Tool: Released in October 2012, the tool lets webmasters tell Google to ignore specific backlinks. Mark plays Matt Cutts audio explaining the tool and offers practical advice: first try to remove bad links manually, then use the disavow tool as a last resort for links you cannot get removed.
Response to Pat Flynn SPI 053: Inspired by Pat's episode about things he wished he had known, Mark shares his perspective as a part-time entrepreneur with a day job. His five lessons: embrace the competition, work from start to profit, match offers with buyers, stop buying things you were not looking for, and work on your business every day even when progress is small.
What's Changed Since This Episode
Mark recorded this in January 2013. The Google Disavow Tool still exists in Google Search Console but is rarely needed as algorithms now ignore most spammy links automatically. The five business lessons remain as relevant as ever for part-time entrepreneurs.

No post explosion banter, what gives! Your show is one of the few I actually listen to the intro and stay through the end.
Dude. You totally busted me. LOL. Banter back in episode 045. Promise to behave from now on!
Thanks for the heads up on that Jason – I would have had to replay post-explosion ad nauseum and then curse my computer. We must have post explosion banter Mark – c’mon Man! 🙂
Understood. Won’t happen again.
Hey Mark – I want you to crush me too dude, and I’m being completely serious. I’ve learned to do the same thing with my ‘competition’: not think of them as competitors, but as colleagues, as friends – and Mark, you already know this but you’re an awesome friend to me, and I want you to have more readers and more subscribers than me. I love how we can all work together, and help each other out in a way that doesn’t really take away from what we have going on individually, but adds to what we can all bring as a whole – I think if everyone understood that the world would be a much better place.
Thanks again for the mention my friend, and keep crushing it!
Thanks man. You rock. It’s a real pleasure to be your friend. Nice month in January, by the way. Crazy.
The Terminator sounds good! Great episode Mark, especially loved the bit at the end. You were speaking to me 🙂 (among others, I’m sure!)
Thanks Glenn — really appreciate the kind words. I love the terminator too — always amazes me how many talented people there are in the world. Hope you have a great week.
I too Understood 🙂Â
