I grew up with the Beatles. Technically, they had long since broken up by the time I was buying records, but their music shaped how I saw the world. Among the many things they taught me, one stood out: all you need is love, and money cannot buy it.
I was pretty sure about that for most of my life. Then I started building an internet business and had to rethink the relationship between money, work, and happiness entirely.
The Make Money Online Myth
There is a persistent myth in the internet marketing world that the only way to make money online is by selling information about how to make money online. It is a circular, cynical view, and it is flat wrong.
The truth is that people will pay for anything that genuinely improves their lives. Fitness programs. Meal planning services. Language learning platforms. Personal development communities. Parenting resources. If you can help people get something they actually want, you have a business.
The Zig Ziglar principle applies here: you can get everything in life you want if you help enough other people get what they want. The internet just makes it possible to help people at scale.
Membership Sites and Recurring Revenue
Back in 2008, a friend of mine launched a personal development membership site. The concept was simple: create a community where like-minded people could support each other on their journey toward happiness, fitness, and financial freedom. The price was less than five dollars to start. Charter members got in on a trial basis.
That model, a low-cost membership with community support, is more viable today than it has ever been. Platforms like Circle, Skool, and Mighty Networks make it easy to build membership communities without custom development. Substack and Patreon enable subscription-based content businesses. The barrier to launching a membership site in 2026 is essentially zero.
The recurring revenue model is powerful for part-time entrepreneurs because it creates predictable income. Instead of starting each month at zero and hoping for sales, you start with a base of paying members. Even a modest membership of two hundred people paying ten dollars a month is two thousand dollars of monthly revenue before you do anything else.
Building a Business That Serves Your Life
Here is what I have learned over nearly two decades of building businesses on the side: the money matters, but only in service of the life you want to live. If your business makes you miserable, the revenue is irrelevant. If your business gives you freedom, flexibility, and the ability to help people, the revenue is a natural byproduct.
The best online businesses are built around three things:
- Something you genuinely care about. You are going to spend hundreds of hours on this. If you pick a niche purely for the money, you will burn out long before the money arrives.
- A real problem you can solve. Passion alone is not enough. There has to be a market of people who want what you are offering and are willing to pay for it.
- A business model that fits your life. If you have a full-time job and a family, a business that requires you to be online twelve hours a day is not going to work. Choose a model that respects your constraints.
The Beatles were right. Money cannot buy you love. But a well-built business can buy you time, options, and the freedom to spend your life on the things that actually matter. That is the real reason to build an internet business. Not to get rich, but to get free.

I would have settled for the Pay Pal as I have not visited McDonalds for years…. and I am one of those vegetarian types š
I’m not a member yet, so I guess I’m a prospect. I actually found your site Mark through Aaron, so I got the juice straight from Aaron, but if I join, I’d be happy to go through your link you, and I’ll have you give the BM gift certificate to someone who wants it. š
