I am going to tell you something that every guru selling a “magic system” hopes you never hear: you are not going to make $27,000 next week from your internet business. You are probably not going to make $27,000 next month. And if someone promises you otherwise, they are lying to you to get your credit card number.
The Problem with Internet Marketing Expectations
The internet marketing world is drowning in unrealistic income claims. Every sales page shows screenshots of massive ClickBank earnings. Every webinar features someone who went from broke to six figures in 90 days. Every Facebook ad promises financial freedom by Friday.
Here is what those claims leave out: the person showing you those screenshots probably has years of experience, an existing email list, established relationships with affiliates, and a team of people helping them. They are not showing you their first result. They are showing you their best result, achieved after years of building infrastructure you cannot see.
When you are just starting out, comparing your results to their highlight reel is a guaranteed path to frustration and quitting.
What Realistic Internet Marketing Goals Actually Look Like
Instead of dreaming about replacing your income overnight, try setting goals that are challenging but achievable:
- Month 1-3: Build your website. Create 10 to 15 pieces of quality content. Set up your social media profiles. Learn the basics of SEO. Your income goal should be zero dollars. Seriously. This phase is about building the foundation.
- Month 3-6: Start getting your first organic traffic. Publish consistently. Build your first few backlinks. A realistic goal is your first dollar online. That first commission or ad click is a milestone worth celebrating.
- Month 6-12: Grow your traffic to a few hundred visitors per month. Start building an email list. Experiment with different offers. A realistic goal is $50 to $200 per month.
- Year 1-2: Scale what is working. Cut what is not. Refine your content strategy. A realistic goal is $500 to $2,000 per month from a part-time effort.
These numbers are not sexy. They will not sell a course. But they are honest, and they are achievable by a normal person working on their business a few hours per week.
The Goal That Actually Matters
When I was starting out, the goal that kept me going was not replacing my six-figure engineering salary. It was much simpler than that. Could my internet business pay for a family vacation? Could it cover the car payment? Could it fund a nice dinner out every week?
Those small, tangible goals are incredibly motivating because they are real. You can picture them. You can feel the difference they make in your life. And once you hit one, the next one feels achievable too.
Why Realistic Expectations Actually Help You Succeed
Here is the counterintuitive truth: people with realistic expectations are far more likely to build successful internet businesses than people with unrealistic ones. Why? Because unrealistic expectations lead to impatience, which leads to constantly jumping from one “opportunity” to the next, which means you never stick with anything long enough for it to work.
Realistic expectations let you be patient. Patience lets you stay focused. Focus lets you build momentum. And momentum is what eventually turns a small side project into a real business.
Set real goals. Do the work. Be patient. That is not a magic system, but it is the only system that actually works.

Nice video Mark. I, too, am in Hawaii this week (Kauai, on vacation). I love breaking larger numbers down into smaller pieces. I think many people get hung up on thinking they need to create a full time income online and lose focus that every sale counts and even earning just $2000 dollars a year may translate into something they would not have had before (extra house payment, smaller “close to home” vacation, new electronic toys)… Hope you’re having fun as well while working.
@LazyBastardLife Aloha!!!
I agree — key is to start with small goals (first visitor, first sale, first $100 month, first $100 week, etc.)….
Having a great time in Hawaii. Thanks!
Regards,
Mark
Hey Mark,
Great video! Totally agree with your mindset. Set realistic longterm goals and work backwards from there. Having goals is a great way to keep your motivated as that’s something that a lot of internet marketers struggle with – finding the motivation to continue when you’re making pennies (if that) each day. But if you keep working hard (and smart) enough your efforts will eventually pay off and you will be able to do nice things like go to Hawaii using your IM money 🙂
Hope you’re having a great time!
Thomas
Nice video you have there Mark… I agree with you.. making goals is the first step before putting them into actions… keep posting!
Thanks — really appreciate that.
