This is the first episode of Mark's video blog series. Inspired by Cliff Ravenscraft's vlogging, Mark starts recording short behind-the-scenes glimpses into his life as a part-time internet marketer with a full-time day job.
Why Start a Video Blog
Mark watched Cliff Ravenscraft's first vlog post and liked the concept: quick, unpolished videos that show what is actually going on behind the scenes of an online business. Rather than Cliff's broader lifestyle approach, Mark plans to keep his vlogs focused on internet marketing topics and business building.
What's on Mark's Mind
Sitting in his car between meetings at his day job at a large company, Mark shares two things occupying his thoughts:
The five-year vision. What would it look like to transition from doing internet marketing at night to doing it full time by age 50? What steps can he take now to enable that possibility in five years? This kind of strategic thinking is what separates hobby businesses from ones that create real options.
Mastermind group positioning. Mark recently joined a mastermind group where he is clearly the least experienced member. In previous masterminds he was often the one helping others or working alongside peers. This is the first time he has been surrounded by people he looks up to in business. He identifies this as step one in growth: surround yourself with people you want to be like.
Key Takeaways
- Unpolished content that shows the real journey can be more valuable than polished productions
- Think in five-year time horizons when building a business on the side
- Surround yourself with people who are ahead of you, not just alongside you
- Use downtime creatively: car rides, breaks between meetings, and commutes are all content opportunities
What's Changed Since This Post
Mark published this in May 2013. Vlogging has become mainstream through YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels. The behind-the-scenes, unfiltered style Mark was experimenting with has become the dominant content format on social media in 2026. Short-form video from smartphones is now how most creators connect with their audiences daily. Mark was ahead of the curve in recognizing the power of showing the real journey rather than just the polished results.

Great job Mark, love it, you got me thinking I need to start doing this.

Thanks a lot Marty! That would be awesome. It’s easy to do, that’s for sure.
Appreciate the feedback.

Good idea Mark, enjoyed it! I may try to do this as well. I’m always thinking about internet marketing and have all these ideas, but lots of times I don’t feel like I have enough info or the time to write up an epic post about it. This would be a great “in-between” type thing.
Thanks Chris. This is exactly what I am planning to do. Once per week. I’m recording the stuff as it comes to me and posting it in the future so that it drips out. Current plan is a short video every Monday. Thanks for the feedback.
