This might seem like strange advice on an internet marketing blog, but after years of building businesses from behind a desk, I am convinced that exercise is one of the most effective productivity tools available to entrepreneurs. And since most of us spend our working hours sitting in front of a screen, this is especially relevant.
I will be honest: I am not always the best example when it comes to fitness. I work out, but not as consistently as I should. So consider this a case of do as I say, not always as I do. But I have seen the difference clearly enough to know it matters.
The Real Cost of Not Exercising
When you are out of shape and carrying extra weight, the effects go far beyond physical appearance. Here is what actually happens to your business when you neglect your body:
- Your self-esteem takes a hit. When you do not feel good about yourself physically, that lack of confidence bleeds into everything else. You second-guess business decisions. You hesitate to put yourself out there. You avoid opportunities that require you to show up on camera or in person.
- Your energy drops. Lethargy is the enemy of productivity. When your body is tired, your mind follows. The business tasks that should take an hour stretch into two because you are dragging through them.
- Your focus suffers. Physical discomfort is a constant, low-grade distraction. When your body is not cooperating, it is harder to concentrate on complex work like writing content, analyzing data, or making strategic decisions.
You Do Not Need to Become a Gym Rat
The good news is that you do not need to train for a marathon or spend two hours a day at the gym. Even moderate, consistent exercise produces meaningful results for your productivity and mental clarity.
Here is what I recommend for busy entrepreneurs:
- Walk for 30 minutes a day. This is the lowest-friction exercise that exists. No equipment, no gym membership, no special clothing. Walk around your neighborhood. Walk during a phone call. Walk after lunch. The research consistently shows that even moderate walking improves cognitive function and mood.
- Do bodyweight exercises at home. Push-ups, squats, planks, and stretching take ten to fifteen minutes and require nothing but floor space. There are excellent free workout apps and YouTube channels designed specifically for people who work at desks all day.
- Schedule it like a business meeting. If exercise is optional, it will not happen. Put it on your calendar and treat it with the same respect you give client calls or content deadlines.
The Compound Returns
Exercise does not just make you feel better in the moment. It compounds over time. Better sleep leads to better mornings. Better mornings lead to more productive work sessions. More productivity leads to faster business growth. Faster growth leads to more motivation, which makes it easier to maintain the exercise habit.
It is a virtuous cycle, and it starts with something as simple as a daily walk.
Your body is the foundation that everything else sits on. Your business, your creativity, your relationships, your energy — all of it depends on how well you take care of yourself physically.
Start small. Start today. Your business will thank you for it.

Personally, I do take exercise seriously and i really find the time to do it. Great motivational tip!
This has been a real tough problem for me in the past. After trying several different ideas, I have come to the conclusion that it must be a daily ritual. For me to do this though I have to schedule the workouts at the beginning of the week to fit it all in with my busy schedule.
I mix up the workouts between weights and cardio. I can only do weights at night when my body is warmed up and I have eaten and have energy to burn. So I have to schedule those nights when I’m not booked with other things (right now sailing).
It’s easy once you get going, I am approaching 2 months now without missing many days. I feel great, lots of energy and am starting to look better (shedding a few chins 8-))
Great post.

Ahhh…Exercise the answer to many social ills. I am 60 years old and try my best to keep up with the younger generation. I work out 3 sometimes 4 times per week and it gives me energy, youthful appearance and the ability to forge ahead with my own IM needs.
BTW I have weights and workout equipment next to my PC. Sometimes in the middle of a work out I get instant ideas and inspiration.

I am very conscious of the relationship between exercise and mental and physical health.
I have to be careful of remembering, that In as much as I want to make a success of my online business I cannot sacrifice my physical fitness, sometimes it requires a while away from the PC to get some perspective back.

Exercise and health are so important. I now when I’m consistent I have more energy but when I get behind, then my energy levels get behind.
Thanks for the reminder to look away from the computer.
Hello Mark,
I only can agree with you, how important it is to do some exercise. As I’m very lazy with it 🙂 I found something which suites perfectly to enlarge my daily motivation and energy. Ever heard of Colonel Bradford and his 5 marvellous exercises?
A wonderful start in every new day full of energy to all of you.
