There is a well-known idea that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Whether or not the math is exactly right, the principle is undeniable: the people around you shape your motivation, your expectations, and ultimately your results.

Your Network Is Your Fuel

When you surround yourself with people who cheer you on, check in on your progress, and genuinely want to see you succeed, staying motivated is almost automatic. Their energy is contagious. Their belief in you fills the gaps when your own belief runs low. And their accountability keeps you moving when you would rather quit.

On the flip side, when the people around you constantly tell you that your goals are unrealistic, that your side business is a waste of time, or that you should just be grateful for what you have, your motivation erodes. Not overnight, but steadily, like water on stone.

Building a Motivating Network in 2026

You do not have to cut every negative person out of your life. That is not realistic and it is not what I am suggesting. What I am suggesting is that you intentionally add more positive, driven people to your circle:

  • Join online communities where people are working toward similar goals. Discord servers, Slack groups, and niche forums are full of part-time entrepreneurs who understand exactly what you are going through.
  • Attend events. Conferences, meetups, and mastermind groups — whether virtual or in person — are where the most meaningful connections happen. I have met some of my most important business friends at live events.
  • Find an accountability partner. One person who is at a similar stage, working toward a similar goal, who you check in with weekly. This single relationship can be more motivating than any course or book.

Choose Deliberately

Your friendships are not just a social decision. They are a business decision. The people who motivate you are an asset. Invest in those relationships the same way you invest in your business tools and education. The returns will surprise you.
