Do you have a magical breakthrough goal strategy? I thought not. More likely, you often feel like you are in a loop (kind of like the movie Groundhog Day). Each December you get excited about the coming year and set some wonderful goals to be accomplished in the next twelve months. So far, so good.
Then, somehow, the year comes and goes and you did not manage to accomplish all (or perhaps even any) of your goals. Ray Edwards was no stranger to this cycle. But in 2015 Ray employed Michael Hyatt’s Best Year Ever course techniques to achieve amazing things over the next two years.
In this episode, we sit down with Ray for an intimate look at exactly what he was able to accomplish, and how he did it. My hope is that you’ll be able to learn from Ray’s example and that the insights Ray provides will be instrumental in in your success in 2017.
What's amazing about this interview is how transparently Ray shares all of his past failings and shortcomings. It's great stuff, and I'll bet is sounds a lot like some of the things you have experienced in your life.
This was a great discussion with Ray — and surprisingly intimate. Ray reminds us that even really successful people have their demons, and have to work to overcome them. I feel privileged to have spent time with Ray discussing something so personal.
One of the things that I love about Ray is that he is “unashamedly Christian” but he does not judge those who don't share his beliefs. Ray hopes that you can take something away from his teachings no matter your value system,
The really key takeaway for me in this episode was the fact that you need to know WHY you are trying to accomplish whatever goal you set. He quotes Gail Hyatt, who said “People lose their way when they lose their Why”. As a direct result of that (and learnings from Michael Hyatt's Best Year Ever course), Ray was able to harness the power of why to great effect.
You won't believe the things Ray (who was already successful by any measure) was able to achieve using the strategies he describes in this episode.

By many measures, Ray was already successful but the rest of the story was that he had health problems and he was deep in debt. He had areas wherein he was not employing the same discipline that he is applying in his career and there were facets behind the scenes that people could not see. He also made resolutions year after year for the last 10-15 years to relieve himself and his family distress but each year goes by and nothing happened. It began to feel like an integrity issue then got hit with a health diagnosis that he had a generative neurological disorder. And he hit rock bottom and made himself choose: either he could face the fact that we will die overweight and broke, or do something about all of these.
He embarked on a two-year journey where the results included losing 60 lbs. of fat; paying off all consumer debts except for the mortgage (which they have already cut in half); finishing about 70 books including the Bible (which he read, actually read, four times in one year); deepening his relationship with his wife; and being able to take a 30-day sabbatical. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that doctors said was only going to get worse but he begged to differ and actually got better! He gives glory to the Lord and hopes that it inspires others. But when you look back, we can only wonder, how did Ray do all these? With strong motivation, clear direction and tactics:
- For every goal, he listed the benefits of achieving them but the longer list was made up of the cost of not achieving it.
- He failed often and did not have the willpower to overcome so he removed the temptation: removed carbs in the house, refrain from going to places where he was tempted to eat the things he was not supposed to eat, etc.
- He came clean with his struggles and recognized that it’s unrealistic to think that all of your struggles will magically go away so he had a strategy for when it comes up.
- He took the time to be alone from his normal environment and wrote down his areas of opportunities. He listed the consequences to him and to his loved ones if he will not address these, and benefits and outcome if he does.
- Ray wrote a least 7 goals and shared them with people who had a stake in the outcome.
- He participated in Michael’s Best year Ever Program.

Ray Edwards Breakthrough Goal Strategy Interview Transcript
If I sound excited, it’s only because I am. We have Ray Edwards on the show today. If you don’t know Ray, he is master and commander of RayEdwards.com, he has The Ray Edwards Show podcast, which is one of my favorite podcasts that I listen to every week without fail, and he is an internationally known copywriter. In addition to that, he’s a normal guy who had a great life that he has recently been able to take to new levels of amazing through the use of the kind of goals strategies that we’ve talked about right here on this show.
He’s a guy, just like you and me, who every year would set goals in January and sometimes he would hit them and sometimes he wouldn’t. Something changed in 2015 and he has been able to knock it out of the park and totally crush it personally and professionally through the use of goal strategies that I think are going to help you with your 2017.
In addition to talking about goals, we kind of ran out of time so, Ray produced some special content just for listeners of the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast that you’ll find at RayEdwards.com/markmason. In addition to all of the great content that you’re about to hear, when you’re done with this show I want you to go check that out. There’s no opt-in or anything, no affiliate link, just a video that you can see about copywriting that I think will help you with your business in 2017.
More about that video later. Right now, let’s get into this interview with Ray Edwards….
