This week on the Late Night Internet Marketing Podcast, we outline 14 critical SEO Tips for bloggers that are relevant for 2016 (and probably 2017 based on current predictions).  Of course, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, so what we are really talking about in this episode are things you can do to have a better chance of ranking in Google.

As you know, ranking in Google is important because it is an amazing source of free traffic if you can figure out how to get it. Once your site ranks well in Google, it’s like turning on a traffic faucet that you can’t ever turn off.

Google has made a lot of changes over the last five year to combat internet marketers (like me and others far worse than me) who have tried to manipulate the search engine rankings to their advantage. Those days are (mostly) behind us, and the best strategy today is to simply to write the best content you possibly can and present it in a manner that makes it easy for Google to recognize it as such.

To help you with that, I’ve included a blog post SEO checklist. Look for the download button further down in the show notes to get your free copy.

In case you missed it, last week I discussed how to pick a domain name in episode 108. So, these two episodes go together pretty well. Once you get a domain up and running, you’re going to want to have content on that domain ranking in Google (and Bing too, for that matter).

Next week I’m planning on boosting your confidence a little. I’ll be talking about Imposter Syndrome and how you are probably already an expert in your niche. You won’t want to miss that next week.

SEO Tips For Bloggers Show Notes

Know what keywords your post is targeting – Imagine the ideal keyword phrase that a searcher would type in Google and if they will be delighted to open that site when Google delivers that to them. It should be the keyword phrase that you should be targeting.

Have multiple versions of your keywords in your post – Google is looking for human-like conversations so place variations of your keywords in your post. If you are targeting suede shoes, for example, you can place ‘light blue suede shoes’ or ‘azure leather shoes (suede)’. To research related phrases use UberSuggest.com.

Have the best content for your keywords – Ensure that you have the best content for your keywords because Google’s search engine’s job is to find the best content. Even if you don’t outrank some other junkie sites today, if your content is the best, Google will make that sure that someday, you will.

Have more words that your competition – Your content should be in long form. Put your keywords in, look at the competition, see many words they have on their page, and work on making yours longer.

Your main keywords should be in the Title Tag and in the Post Slug – If your article in about blue suede shoes, these words should be in your article’s title as these are the words that searchers are typing. At the end of that address in the website name is the page name or the post slug. You’ll also want to be in the URL address that people have to type in to go directly to your page so make sure you have your keywords in your title.

Have a compelling SEO title – Optimize your title for keyword placement but also write in a way that will intrigue your audience to check you site out.

Have a compelling description – The same thing that is true for SEO title goes for descriptions. The main difference is that descriptions are not considered in the ranking algorithm. But, searchers are read those descriptions and decide if they should click through to your site through what you write.

Have outbound authority links – It satisfies Google as it establishes that you are a real website with real authority in what you are talking about. Make sure you link to sites that are related but don’t directly compete with you.

Link to other pages in your website – Its good SEO practice to link to other content in your site, both to and from the page you are writing. Google considers time on site and bounce rate when deciding where to rank you page, and internal links can help. Do this in a way that is helpful to your reader.

Have images which are keyword rich – Images pull people in visually and there is opportunity to place keywords in images. The two places you can place keywords are in the “alt tags” and “title tags.”

Place your keywords somewhere in the section titles inside your posts – make sure that your keywords appear in your article headings.

Have backlinks with varied anchor text – In order for your article to rank, you should build backlinks. On these occasions, make sure you use many variations of your keywords if you get to pick the words that are used to link to your page (called the anchor text) so they will look natural.

Use backlinks coming from relevant content – Link only to quality sites which have something to do with your article.

There should be a sharing signal for your content – Someone who is trying to identify good content should take virality into account so make sure your articles are easy to share.

Avoid duplicated content – Check if your article is duplicated either on your site or anywhere else in the internet by running it through Copyscape. If you need to post the same content, a call-to-action in every article for example, convert repeated text to images.
