Show Notes

John Lee Dumas started from zero. Before Entrepreneur on Fire became one of the most successful podcasts in business, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars per month, JLD was a regular guy trying to figure out online business. Mark emphasizes this context because it makes JLD relatable to listeners who are just starting out.

The interview covers several key topics:

SMART Goals Are the Common Thread. After interviewing over 1,000 entrepreneurs, JLD identified one behavior that successful entrepreneurs share: they know how to set and accomplish SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. JLD walks through how he applied each step when building Entrepreneur on Fire.

Parkinson's Law. The biggest business lesson JLD brought from his military service is Parkinson's Law: work expands to fill the time available for its completion. Give yourself a week to complete a task and it takes a week. Give yourself a day and it takes a day. JLD applies this ruthlessly to his business operations.

The Slight Edge. JLD recommends The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson, a book about the power of doing small things right every single day. The compound effect of consistent small actions is what separates people who succeed from those who do not.

The Freedom Journal. JLD discusses his upcoming passion project, The Freedom Journal, a physical journal designed to help entrepreneurs accomplish their number one goal in 100 days. It launched on Kickstarter in January 2016.

His core quote: “If you want to be, do.”

What Has Changed Since This Episode

Mark recorded this interview in November 2015.

John Lee Dumas continued to build a massive business. The Freedom Journal Kickstarter campaign raised over $450,000 and led to additional physical products. Entrepreneur on Fire continued publishing daily episodes and JLD became known for his income transparency, publishing detailed monthly income reports. He and his partner Kate eventually moved to Puerto Rico and built a lifestyle business that aligned with their personal goals.

The daily podcast model JLD pioneered has become less common. While daily podcasting was a differentiator for Entrepreneur on Fire, the podcasting industry has largely moved toward weekly or biweekly publishing schedules. The content demands of daily production proved unsustainable for most creators, and audiences showed preference for longer, deeper episodes over daily short-form content.

SMART goals remain foundational but have been supplemented. The SMART framework is still widely taught, but many entrepreneurs now combine it with systems-based thinking (inspired by James Clear's Atomic Habits) and OKR frameworks. The emphasis has shifted from individual goal achievement to building systems and habits that make progress automatic.
